For that kind of money you cannot beat the Canon G9 for image quality, advanced features (for dipping your toes in creative photography), and build. (Note: A G10 is expected to be announced soon.

If you need something stupidly compact -- Sony is the way to go.

My DSCT10 was 599.99 when I got it 3 years ago. That was when I was w/ Circuit City, so it only cost me 499.99
