I bought a half cord in PA to use during one winter we spent there. We used the fireplace at least twice a week and it worked fine for us.
We were lucky that all fireplace was in the center of the living room b/c the next day, the bricks on the back side of the FP would still be throwing off some warmth.

Fireplaces don't really do a good job of heating a home because they suck outside air in through all the little cracks and crevices in doors, windows, etc. as they send heat up the chimney. The area around the fire place gets nice and toasty but the rest of the house will be freezing.

As big as you can move.
Seriously, I have split logs that took two of us to get it on there. The problem is, if it doesn't pop, you need to rotate it. I would say if you can get your arms around it, you can split with the machine. Any larger than that, I would manually bust it in half first, in order to make it easier to handle.
I believe it has 27 tons of pressure.

I have some real monsters to split. I did a few of them by hand but broke an "unbreakable" splitting maul in the process. I can pick them up by myself but they are dense as hell.
I bet that little sucker you got will go right through them.
