Everything I've read has been talking about engine serial numbers. I haven't found an explanation of how the two are related.

"Check the body panels (especially the edges) for signs of repainting. If the last four digits of the VIN are below 5000, then make sure the TSB for the #4 cylinder banjo bolt has been completed. Finally, I personally would avoid any car that has aftermarket performance mods because it's more likely to have been abused.

GPW w/ full red interior is one of the rarest and best looking S2K color combinations out there. Go for it! "

How could it depend on only 4 digits? There were certainly more than 9999 engines made in 2002

Anybody have any insight for me?

I'm supposed to be figuring out if my engine serial number is before or after approx. F20C 1102 5386

There is no 8 digit sequence of numbers in a VIN, so I'm confused.
The engine serial isn't reflected in the VIN as such. I'm sure Honda has a record of which serials went in which cars, but there's no direct way to get one from the other.
