I can do spec Miata.
OTS cars are really hard for me.
I either add the full suspension, and sway bars, and try to tune the massive oversteer out. heavy front bar, soft rear bar, heavy front spring, etc
Toe in the rear and even front.
Race brakes too. And race or at least sport tires
Plus lower the accell on the diff to the 40's

That's it right there. The biggest challenge to making a lot of these cars fast is tuning out massive oversteer becuase so many of the cars have it. The s2000 I believe is one of them. Maybe not massive but enough that's harder to drive fast. It took me a while but I think I finally got around it and it becomes so much easier.
Right now I'm still trying to find a way to make FWD cars drive the way I want. I've got a couple good ones but none are perfect. AWD cars I don't like because they take such a point hit for being AWD and it really doesn't help. On just about every course on the game a well tuned RWD will beat the AWD tuned to the same level....or maybe I'm not doing enough tuning with my AWD cars.
It wouldn't let me join the session you guys had going last night. I got one of those NAT error messages. Can't remember exactly what it said but I remember having that come up in the past on the old XBOX.
I have to double-check that I have port forwarding setup. Jim had the error at first too, but was able to do something on his end.
