Default job question

ok, here is the scenario, i have been at my current job for 10.5 months. in order to transfer within the company, you need 12 months or managers approval. i like the position i am in, and am on great terms with my boss. another (better) position has opened up and i am interested, the catch is that the application deadline is on friday, and my boss is on vacation untill after that. (i know i was late in catching the posting) should i call my boss and try to discuss it with her? the worst case scenario would be if she denys to sign the transfer and then i have to stay in my current postion and now she thinks that i am unhappy where i am. all in all, she has been a great boss, and lets me get away with a lot of stuff, but i dont want to piss her off by basically saying " i dont want to work for you anymore."

thoughts, comments?

Out of respect and not to burn any bridges, I would call her up and explain to her that there is another position open that you are really interested and would like to apply with her approval. Tell her that you respect her opinion and that she has been nothing but great since you've been with her. Just reiterate that this has nothing to do with her being a horrible boss, but more in terms of advancing your career, and that you respect her enough to talk to her about it.

thanks, basically the answer i was looking for. i just hate having to do it over the phone. i just found out about the posting yesterday and it was her last day before vacation. but for some reason, i thought that yesterday was the 12th, so i figured i could talk to her about it when she got back. lol
