Small engine manufacturers are saying gasoline is stable for 30 days. After that, throw it out.
This may be a little overkill though. Also, keep your oil in the unit until the next season and change it before using it the first time. If you want to warm it up, so it will flow out better, that is fine, but change it once its warm. Also, do not mess with the drain plug on the bottom of the engine, they are a bear to get out and strip easily. Plus they are dirty and let dirt into your engine if you are not careful. Remove the dipstick, tip the mower on its side, making sure the air filter is pointing towards the sky, and let the oil come out the drain tube.
