Default Hello from Socal

Aloha
I just made up my mind that i will be transfering to either HPU or UH of Manoa this upcoming fall and need some help/advice.

1. Between HPU and UH, does anyone know or have gone to either of these schools? For the past 6-7 years i've been going to smaller private schools like HPU, so i am more comfortable in that type of enviroment, but is UH a place i can also have fun and supportive learning?

2. Where would a good place to live and meet others from school? I'd rather not live in the dorms, but not caved in my room all day. I have around $1000 a month for an apartment.

3. The most important question I have.. If i ship my s2k over, will i need put everything back to stock form? I heard you must inorder to pass the safety regulations when your shipping a car. Mostly concerned about my steering wheel, bucket seat, coilovers

Thanks in advance for the helpful advice..and you can bet i'll be attending the meets(even if i dont have my s2k )

ok hpu is a better school than uh. or they have better teachers. uh is ok i guess (im going there now)
for $1000 you wont find much unless your lucky. usually it will be a studio for that price. hawaii is an island with limited space and overpriced rent.
i would put stock suspension on while shipping and throw the bucket in shipping.

Ha ha, I don't know when HPU > UH, But I suppose it depends on what you will be majoring in. I've been so long out of school, I can't comment on the quality between the schools. I do know a lot my classmates went to HPU after flunking out of UH, but this was while back (no offense to anyone) and they are doing extremely well. I do hear that HPU has smaller class sizes, but I personally never cared about that. HPU sure produce a lot of Ms. Hawaii's...

I believe UH is cheaper, too. I've been looking at the MBA programs for both UH and HPU and UH per semester(wild guess here) is 4K compared to -- I think was around 20K for HPU (I don't care, my company will pay for it if I do attend school again). $1K for rent is doable -- with a roommates, of course.

Good luck.

UH vs. HPU is similar to UCLA vs. USC

uh off campus housing is worse than the dorms. the buildings they list are in bad condition and are in shady neighborhoods. a police car chase ended when the car ran to one of the off campus apartments. and i hear stories about lots of thefts.

might be a different story for hpu.

i graduated from UH ten years ago, so i can't comment on the current situation. when i was there, many of the departments were very well taught and well staffed.

if you get a roommate with a $1000 budget, you'll be OK. find something in the $1600 range. rent in my apartment that i'm selling is around $2000/mo. electric and water $175. HD and telephone $100. you don't have to eat, right?

Don't forget about parking. Not only will $1000/month not get you much in town but it will only come with 1 parking space. Getting a roomate and a 2 bedroom like you suggested won't guarantee two spaces! Especially in town.

If you head out to some of the 'suburbs" like Waipio, Mililani etc. you'll find more choices, for example our 2 bedroom/1 bath/ 2 parking townhouse is renting in the 1000-1200 range. However, now you have to face the traffic.

2 grand normally gets you two parking. just gotta find a roomate with the same budget as you.
