Default Moving to Honolulu... maybe

Aloha! I've been offered a job in Honolulu that pays about the same as I presently make in S. Florida (captaining a ship) I know the cost of living is significantly higher, but I really feel ready for a change and this job would give me a much better ratio of sea-time/shore-time than I presently have. Also my fiance is an Igneous petrologist (Think Volcano geologist, and we seem to be a bit short of volcanic activity out here on the E coast)
I am currently negotiating salary and am trying to get the company to cough up some moving expenses, including bringing my S2000 over, I just can't give her up. Has anyone shipped a car recently who could recommend a shipper and estimate a price?
Any advice that anyone may have would be helpful including housing etc.. The move would be happening in mid-April

Thanks in advance!
Mike

i think horizon lines charges around $800 from long beach. the price is for a container which only has your car in it.

it would be hard to compare standards of living without knowing your standard in Florida, but IIRC it aint cheap over there either.

hope to see you here soon.

I've moved back and forth a couple times with the military. The Navy contracts out to Matson for all of their vehicle shipping needs and so far I haven't had a problem with them. I've also used them privately (military only ships one car) and they treated my car well.

Their current rate is $899.00, with drop off points in Seattle, Oakland and LA. I know they also ship household goods but I've never used them for that.

Good Luck,
-Nate

If the company is covering the expenses:
1) I recommend Matson because their shipping time from LA seems to be alot faster than Horizon. both set the same price @900 (suspciously illegal, but whatevers). From FL -> CA, just use any car shipping company that takes it to Long Beach.
2) Use Crown Relocation for moving general household goods.

If it were my money to relocate:
1) rent a truck to tow all your household goods and the S.
2) once you get to long beach, you can actually rent a WHOLE shipping container. That's the best way to go because you can stuff your car as well as your household goods in there. Alot cheaper than shipping them individually. Sorry, I don't know the price.

good luck on the move.

I need to bookmark this page. I may be moving to Hawaii in a year or so. I have two cars I like to ship to Hawaii, my S and my wife's Merc and some household goods. I need to find out from whom I can rent the whole shipping container.

Thanks a lot for this info. Aloha !

Thanks for all the replies! Interestingly, Matson Marine is the company trying to hire me, so hopefully they can throw in a container and cover costs from FL to CA for the S and household effects. I should be hearing back from them within the next 2 weeks. It's great to know that S2KI is alive and well in Hawaii, I've really come to enjoy the people as much as the car.
Cheers!

If I move to Honolulu, I will leave earthquakes behind me for sure. I hope that I will not face Tsunami in Hawaii

Mike, prepare for a shock in housing cost in Oahu. It costs much more than most parts of Florida. An average size house about 2000 sq-ft in a nice area can cost more than $1mil.

My current plan is to rent for the first 2-3 months and see how much I like the job, island, where fiance gets a job, etc. before starting to shop for a house. I'm assuming that the values have been roaring upwards for the past decade or so and have recently hit a sort of mini-plateau like many of the other hot markets, regardless of whether I buy now or later, I'm sure to get in right at the top of the market, as usual.
I have until the end of 06 to decide before taking a capital gain hit on my previous house.
Thanks again, Mike
