Why? What's your connection to, for, against Walmart? Just curious? I thought their business plan was unique when they first started-- they've adapted, dominated and now dictate the economy to a point where they've sorta become a Microsoft...no strong passion in my part for or against Walmart. I've just been a long time DRIP investors....so I'm not complaining.
To keep it short, I have never been a fan of the environment and I refuse to support a company that drains our tax dollars, treats their employees like crap, and takes advantage of other countries lax labor laws.
I really suggest watching the video link on the OP, vary informative. I have not stepped foot into a WalMart in years, and plan to support smaller businesses even if I have to pay a few extra bucks.
Well..Not to sound harsh, but I could careless about how their employees are treated like "trash", or how they take advantage of other countries "tax labor laws"..whatever that means..You don't like your job. Quit and get another one. You're too much of a dumb ass to do that -- that's your problem.
I think I've seen this documentary or something similar on Frontline (probably, the best news documentary show, period), but I recall very little of it. And that link you posted is 90 min's long -- much too long for me to actually view of all of it.
What I like about Walmart:
1) Open 24 hours....convenience and as a bonus you get to sample all demographic types. Really, visit a Walmart on the weekend as opposed to weekday. 0200 as opposed to 1400 on a Saturday. Shopping at Walmart is fun...like hanging out at Ala Moana on the weekend, just to people watch.
2) Better prices for some items...Walmart does not have the best prices, but it's sorta like Amazon. Most likely you'll get a competitive price and with some items you will get significant savings. But that's how Walmart works...they give you an impression that they're the better deal, but that's how they entice you/brainwash you into thinking that...it works for the most part. They're one the few doing well when there's a downturn in the economy.
3) They're ubiquitous....####, they're all over the place now. How many Walmarts can they fit on this Island? We'll have 4 soon? And now they started building in urban/crowded/populated areas. They use to go and build out in the boonies where rent/land/labor was significantly cheaper. Again, they're just convenient.
4) I'm not sure where some people came to the conclusion they're "ghetto". One great thing about Walmart is they're all similary laid out...I can enter a Walmart in HI or one in VA and I'll know where the Electronics section will be. Stores are relatively clean.
I like Walmart, but like you I'll get something from City Mill or Checkers when the price difference isn't too bad. But when there's %20-plus difference in price that is significant and they're right next to each other...nah. I can't do that. That's just plain silly.
Besides...I own a piece of Walmart...ha ha.

This Wal Mart discussion reminds me of the VCR debate; cheap foreign brands are putting American brands out of business. Well it was Americans buying those cheaper VCRs.
Wal Mart is where it is because of average people flocking to lower prices. I'm local and would love to support local business but... last year I needed a cordless drill. I found a Black & Decker I liked at City Mill for $78 including a plastic carry case but priced out Wal Mart since I was going there anyway. It was $25 for the same drill, but in a cardboard box. No brainer to me, bought a $10 tool bag and the $25 drill.
