well when you hit the A/C button in the car, there is this very broken noise that is very loud. the air is hot even on the coldest setting as well. If you turn it off there are no sounds whatsoever outside of normal car operation, no smells, no overheating nothing. I stuck my head in there with it on and it's either the clutch that turns the stuff inside the compressor or the whole compressor somehow just gave up.

i didn't try that.. I will tomorrow when it is light out, but I turned it on to let my girlfriend hear it and it nearly stalled the engine out!! Also when you turn it on and you are driving along in gear it feels like you lose half of your HP. That may or may not be an indicator that it will be hard to turn by hand.

yea it does sound like you need a new compressor. i would try to refrain from using it. if there are particles from your compressor that circulate throught the system then you have to change everything. well it might already be too late. but a new compressor from majestic is like 400 bucks or so. its not all that bad.
