Default Oil Viscosity

Following on from my partial success with getting rid of the TCT rattle (noise stayed away for about 4 days):

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=669717

I'm going to carry out an experiment with the oil grade to see if it makes a difference to suffering the dreaded rattle.

I read in the service manual that the 10w-30 is the preferred choice but there is also a picture showing 5w-40.

Noting the last Honda service topped me up with 0w-40:
[CODE]Viscosity 100

The true test of how thick an oil is looking as purley the viscosity of the base oils used(BOV -Base oil viscosity). Joe public won't ever know that though

The KV100 numbers are higher in finished formulations due to the Viscosity modifier used, there are many different types and they all respond different under shear loading (some temporarily shear down).

How an oil flows at 100C down a tube doesn't neccessarily relate to how thick it is in an engine. Generally you are safe in assuming that the higher the Winter grade (eg 5W) the thicker the base oil used.

HTHS shows the thickness of an oil at 150C under a shear rate of 10^6, polymers in the oil do assist here and different types have a different effect on boosting the HTHS even if they have a similar effect on KV100.

For what it's worth that Castrol 5W-40 looks good for the sort of thing you are looking at. I don't know as much about the other oils you mention, a magnatec 10W-40 could be worth trying too.

interesting read
I too suffer from that poxy TCT thing spirodicly.. (having replaced it 6 months ago)

Have been using 5-30 Castrol Edge for the past 5ltrs or so, and seems like it started off ok, but ended horribly noisy again..

Topped up with the Turbo Diesal edge (5-40) yesterday, and seems to be quiet again - but this could just be due to the fact the oil is a) newer, and b) fuller (i know thats terrible english!)...

Im going to give the 10-60 Edge Sport stuff a go (cant see the difference between the BMW Edge 10-60 and the SPORT stuff tbh, except the sport doesnt have the BMW approval on it). works out about

Re. Edge 10W-60:
I heard several times that it doesn't have the same quality as before - ever since they switched to a different production site 3 years ago.

Do you have any facts on that?
