Default Alpine 98XX Headunit question

I recently installed the Alpine 9813. It worked fine for 3 weeks or so. Once in awhile after changing tracks, I would notice the the titles setting had changed but it wasn't a big deal. Last week when changing tracks the unit started to turn off and then back on again (the Alpine name showed on the display as it does when you first start the car and all settings were lost). One time it froze in the on position (display of track but no sound and none of the buttons worked, had to push the reset button to get it back).

I called Crutchfield and they offered an exchange without any hassle. They said that the first problem sounded like a disruption in the 12V source but not the second (frozen display). Unfortunately I have to return the Alpine harness with the unit which means disconnecting alot of wires (have a DCI too). When I went to disconnect the lead to the battery, I noticed that the insulation on the leads to the fuse had slipped and I figured it was possible that the exposed leads may have been creating the power disruption. I taped the insulation in position.

The unit worked fine for a couple of days. Today I noticed that when changing tracks the unit sometimes (3X) would momentarily go blank, the Alpine display showed but the disruption was so short my settings were not lost.

Has anyone else experienced this on a 98XX unit?

I want to avoind having to go thru the hassle of disconnecting the wiring and then having to reconnect it again.

Thanks,

I installed a 9815 back in March and haven't had a single problem with it.

It sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. Totally independant of the HU manufacter or model. Continued under-voltage and/or power spikes could permantly dammage the unit. I would suggest you swap it out with the generous Crutchfield people and take the opertunity to go over all the wiring and look for shorts or brakes (there may be more than one.) Then re-install.

I'm going to install my 9813 this evening, already done the wiring. Pok, did you connect the power lead to the battery like they suggest? Or just to the harness as it's already wired?

I ran a 10 guage wire with an inline fuse from the battery directly to the HU.

It wouldn't be a big deal to remove the unit, but I also rewired my doors and added rear speakers, so I have 8 more wires running directly to the Alpine harness set.

I also have the DCI wired in.

When you install, make sure you connect the Power Ant. wire.

I just bought a 9813 this past weekend and am waiting for it to show up...I didn't know you had to wire the damn thing right to the battery - how hard is this to do? Can anyone provide some pics or diagrams as to how to do this and how to run the wire through the car's firewall? Also is this required? What if I don't do it this way? Can I just tap into another power wire

It comes wired with 16 guage? wire(yellow w/ fuse?) that is the 12v lead. That can connect directly to the harness. But, on the website, box, and instructions they tell you to get a 10 guage wiring kit and run the 12v lead wire directly to the battery. I know SC_Highlander just has the wire to the harness, and his has worked fine for months. Highlander told me there is a grommet in the passengers side of the firewall that you can put the wire through, and run it to the battery if needed. I assume that since it comes with a wire and fuse already, that will be fine to run through the harness. But the 10 guage alternative may work/sound better.
I am installing tonight with just the 12v lead to the harness and I'll let you know how it goes. If it doesn't work, I can cut it out and do the 10 guage wire to the battery, but I'm going with the easy option first

?
I ran a 10 amp wire with an inline fuse from the battery directly to the HU.
I look forward to your results. Anyone else have any experiance with this? Anything gained by connecting to the battery directly?

10Amp? is that included? I want to be sure i have everything I need when it gets here next Monday

But, on the website, box, and instructions they tell you to get a 10 guage wiring kit and run the 12v lead wire directly to the battery.
Where can one get this wiring kit? How much is it gonna run?

If you remove the battery, there is a wire grommet that is visible. I cut a slit in it and passed it right thru. I then pulled off the panel on the passenger side of the dash and ran the wire across the space there.

It wasn't difficult.
