Default VTEC'ing it before 600 miles

How bad is this? I'm considering going to pickup an '02 Spa tommorow, but it has 39 miles on it What troubles me even more is that the salesguy tells me that the VTEC'ing before 600 miles rule is "bullshit".

Thanks,

Mark

The salesguy is full of bulls**t himself. Follow the break-in procedure!

I'd be worried that with his attitude that someone hasn't already VTEC'd the car with 39 miles on it... Just something to think about...

Hmm..nice to know that your salesperson at least has a good command of the english language

On a more serious note, the consensus on the board appears to be no "VTECing" for the first 600 miles. I first hit VTEC with 535 miles on mine, and I feel that I haven't caused any damage to my motor. Having said that, everyone is different, and entitled to their own opinions. Personally, I would wait AT LEAST 4-500 miles before hitting VTEC.

I personally wouldn't buy an S2000 that was test driven. Mainly because it's so easy to find one that hasn't been. Honda doesn't make the break-in rule for no reason. Ask this guy if he's more knowledgable than the Honda engineers, because that's what he's claiming.

Thanks for the input! I tend to agree with you all here, though my knowledge is somewhat limited. Additionally, the sales guy told me how he "dogged" his white s2k from the day he bought it all the way up to 17,000 miles.

Sheesh..this really sucks. I'm trying to be patient, but it is hard. I guess I'll continue looking for a Spa S2K for MSRP. If anyone knows of one somewhere on the east coast, please let me know.

Thanks,

-Mark

I would still like to know what damage could be done even if (assuming worse case scenario) some complete idiots took the car out and beat the hell out of it for 39 miles.

I know you guys (for the most part ) are very anal about your cars, and though there's nothing wrong with that, I just wonder how big of a deal 39 miles is.

Thoughts?

My take on the break-in question is this, since I'm going through one right now cuz of the new engine. I don't think it's a good idea to rag on the car before break in. But VTEC'ing a lot before X amount of miles isn't going to hurt anything, IMO. Beating the car will...launching hard, stuff like that.

I'm following the break-in procedure, but I don't think it's as big a deal as some make it out to be. Mainly because if break-in were so absolutely critical, Honda would have broken the engines in and not left it up to the customers to do it...

But taking it easy on the car out of the box is probably a good thing...if you VTEC, as long as it's not hard miles, I don't think you will cause any damage...

IMO, of course...

I don't know if any damage is done if you vtec before break-in, but some people have reported that cars that were properly broken-in have more power than the ones that weren't.

I vtec'd my car on the test drive, twice. It only had a dozen or so miles on it. Nobody drove it before or since. It was not vtec'd again until it had 600 miles on it. It now has 17,000 and I have not had any engine problems whatsoever. It's probably still not a good idea though.
Also, I did not red-line it, maybe 8K.
OK, I'm sorry.
