another diff bites the dust (long)
I was out driving on sunday with Davepk...after already covering 200 miles we were on a backroad and my car started making a strange noise. i had been hearing some vibration, i assumed it was the clutch making noise since i only heard it between 4k and 2k rpms.
I WAS WRONG
stopped the car and let davepk drive. he moved not more than a few feet and smoke started coming from the hood! well, it was coming from the diff but the wind pushed it out from the front of the car. diff fluid all over my exhaust and a puddle on the ground. my tow hook snapped trying to pull the car onto the flatbed.
let me reiterate what everyone else has said: hearing that broken diff clunk over while rolling it is a PAINFUL sound!!!
my baby's sitting at the service shop and will most likely be looked at tomorrow. they swapped the fluid about a month ago for my 21k service. the guys there know me pretty well (they tell stories about me to other s2k owners) and i'm still under warrantee at 28.6k miles so they should cover it. i have been wishing there was an official TSB for the differential for a while, now i have even more reason to advocate.
question - how long does the common diff failure take to repair? i'm upset and frustrated that it broke but i'd be pissed if i didn't have the car for my birthday next week. not to mention missing time mackin' on the chickies

josh3io,
First of all, nice Perl script in your sig! Sorry about your car and Happy B'Day! You could always treat yourself and rent an exotic car and/or dancer for the day if your S is not ready.
Besides the vibration, were there any other loud noises, i.e., clunking noises, prior to this happening? Any grinding?
I am a little more than curious as I may not be far behind you.

Josh, sorry to hear of your broken diff...that's a real bummer.
I do have a question. Are you someone who frequently drops the clutch? I have 27k miles, and very hard miles at that, but I rarely, like maybe 10 times have dropped the clutch in earnest.
What about you?
Again, sorry to hear...that had to hurt.

Josh's diff broke because he is a loser and can't drive too well.

We have suspected his diff wasn't good for a while, when myself, davepk and josh were at dave's house putting on our SS brake lines we notice that josh's rear wheels weren't spinning too freely when the car was in the air. That is when he took it to the dealer and they changed the fluid.

IM sorry to hear about your car. It took only a day to replace my diff once the parts arrived. They overnighted mine so it should take no longer than 2 days. I hope Honda is looking at this. I know they are for they used these threads to prove their case against me in my arbitration. I wonder if there is to be a TSB that everyones will get replaced again that has had theirs replaced once. Because when i got mine replaced..honda said they could NOT promise that it wouldnt happen again. This is due to the fact that Honda Tech's have no idea why they are breaking. I say that Honda needs to go ask Mazda whats going on. To remind everyone..Mazda makes the Stooks Rear end..NOT Honda. Again..im sorry for your broken diff. and wish you on the road as soon as possible.
