Son-of-a-buck!!!

I love the wealth of experience on this board...so hopefully someone will nail this issue for me. Lord knows my local Honda dealer has tried ...but to no avail it seems. Right off the bat, please no "you're letting the clutch out wrong" responses. I'm not trying to be a dick, but anyone that knows my driving experience can attest that I know how to drive my car (right up to the day I slam it into a wall I suppose ). Seriously though, this is a mechanical issue without a doubt...not driver. My Honda service tech and I have taken this car out and run it through the computer diagnostics repeatedly. I've been able to force the car to present the scenarios described below & they've baselined & diagnosed as best they could. Thought it was fixed recently with a throttle-body replacement...but this morning it presented again in a "U-Turn". I'm sick of this. Need help quick!!!

Scenario #1 (and most common "daily-driver" experience) -- I have to make a "U-Turn" at a light/intersection. No crazy revving here or nothing. Just good ol' fashion 3/4 acceleration in the turn effort. No slipping of wheels. No rev-limiter (heck...this is usually gonna find me below/at VTEC engagement). With all the above explained...its as though, having come typically 120 degrees through the U-turn that it seems the fuel cuts out or the electric shuts off or ...well, I just don't know. The damn car bogs/bucks. To me, "bogs" is a better term since as long as I keep my foot in the accelerator, it just continues forward in a bogged effort. If I release my foot and immediately punch it again...the car/engine performs beauteously. But that bog BITES!!!

Scenario #2 (less common as more often happens only with "meet/events" where I drive in twisties) -- That's right. Tight turns. Left or right (especially likely to show its ass in "S" turns). Same bog/buck issue as related in Scenario #1, but obviously its definitely a "rolling run" scenario, rather than a full stop to start scenario as presented in the "U-Turn" issue above.

What has been done thus far:
  • Spark plugs replaced
  • Coils replaced
  • Replaced MAP sensor
  • Entire throttle body replaced [really thought this was going to be the culprit & hadn't had much problem since this replacement ~ 3 weeks now...but damned buck/bog happened again this morning coming into work at a "U-Turn"]

What I can add as information for consideration:
  • Oil stays topped off
  • Oil is Amsoil & Amsoil oil filter
  • I have an Injen CAI
  • No high RPM clutch-dumps...ever
  • 56K miles now on car (extended warranty covers me thru ~ 87K
  • Although I believe this is a fuel/electronics "bog" and not a mechanical "drag" issue, I will additionally report that (wholly separate from this issue/diagnostic effort) my rear diff was replaced ~ 15K miles ago.

Things I still consider a possibility that have not been investigated:
  • "Banjo Bolts"...I own 'em (purchased them from hardtopguy last winter). [I've asked my dealership to consider installing them...but they seem adamant to suggest that doing so would void my warranty. Especially with all they have been extremely willing to do, its unfortunate that they have this view regarding the oil bolts . I *SERIOUSLY* have wondered from the beginning of this experience, however, if I'm getting some g-force induced oil-push that is starving a cylinder...and the buck/bog is the computer's way of communicating to me...]
  • Fuel Injectors...dunno why I'd want to consider these...other than possible trash that keeps presenting itself in these perhaps.
  • Fuel filter(s)...nothing replaced here yet. Can it be???

So there ya go! Have at it....PLEASE!!!! I'm really tired of this.

Much thanks in advance!!!

- Dave

Perhaps it's the diff?

Sorry...forgot that! Yes, I have a replaced map as well...was done as a diagnostic possibility separate from the throttle body by ~ 1 1/2 weeks. Will update initial post to that effect momentarily.

WRS2K...sorry, because I chewed up my 1st diff last winter, I'm relatively certain that its not the new one. This "feels" like a fuel/electronics issue. Its altogether a "bog"...not a mechanical drag. Can that make sense? Thanks for the suggestion, however!

Hey Dave do you think it could have anything to do with your Injen CAI?

Dunno . That's why I put the CAI in the soup mix here.

I certainly hate the idea of pulling that mutha out and reinstalling my stock airbox to screen that possibility from the soup, but its a road I might need to travel. It is, however, why I've finally decided to post this post. You know...maybe another Injen/AEM owner might read the thread and either 1) test their own cars in hard-g turns / U-Turns at 3/4 throttle, or 2) post that they do/don't have this problem...ever...and they've been in such scenarios enough to report if they had or had not experienced the problem.

Thanks ...I'll certainly consider giving a swap a thought if I receive additional contention that the CAI might be the culprit. Perhaps its starving for O2 as I push in the corners... Perhaps its doing something funky with the fuel/air mix inside the cylinders in hard-g's. Again...dunno. All I do know is my brain hurts from trying to diagnose this pestering peeve.

Yeah maybe another Injen CAI owner will chime in if they had had the problem also. How long have you had the CAI on your car? Do you ever remember this happening in the past? Was this the same problem you were having when we were at the Dragon earlier this year?

loose ground? I recently removed a lot more of my wire harness and forgot to tighten the bolt for the rear ground wires. (behind the gas filler neck under the soft top tray. You should be able to get to it by removing the trunk trim.

That bolt may not be loose in your case but the symptoms are similiar. I got to the track w/ the ground loose and the car died on me once and was hesitating really bad as the fuel pump uses that ground point. It would wiggle lose and lose ground for a second or more, then come back on.

So you could have a ground/electrical problem.

Might also want to have them check your fuel pump.

YUP! Very same (that's why I'm mentioning the experience with the hard-g turns). A U-turn from a stoplight is not a hard-g turn...but I would consider the counter-camber "S" turns of The Dragon equivalent to a hard slolam course.

As for the duration of the CAI's install. Its been on my car for well over 1 year now I'd suspect. Did I have problems with this bog/buck prior to the CAI install? No. Did I push my car as hard as I do now? No again... Does my asking myself those questions help me diagnose if my CAI plays a role? I don't feel like it does...but someone else might have reason to think otherwise.

PS. I still want to lean heavily on the thought of these damned oil jet bolts (banjo bolts) that I'd purchased in a desire to avoid the #4 cylinder problems that plague some S2K owners that drive their cars hard (and that Honda Europe has issued a TSB replacement on!). Again, although I've purchased them, I've not yet installed them based on my dealer's warranty concerns. Makes no sense personally (and I may just replace them anyway...I mean, cripes!, how are they likely to ever know/diagnose if I replace these oil jet bolts inside my crankcase?!). But for me, I keep thinking, if there is an oil-starvation issue in these turns, that perhaps the computer senses it and adjusts by trying to shutdown the engine (or whatever ). Being as its a stick-shift however, it bogs/bucks (like you'd try to "pop the clutch" to bump-start a manual tranny with a dead battery, ya know?). Anyway...the oil jet bolts are still my strongest [but unfounded] suspicion personally.

Partially clogged fuel filter? I don't get how the jet bolts would cause this.
