Default Rattling in roof on driver side, please help!!

Hiya,

I have been noticing this weird rattling noise coming from the left of the soft top above the driver's head. It is so annoying

It sounds like clicking, or tapping and i have tried to feel around and see if anything is loose in the metallic joint there, but it doesnt seem like it. I cant reproduce this sound by using my hands, it will only happen when driving over bumps or rough road. I totally cant figure out WTF is it and its driving me nuts.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so can you please point me in the right direction!

Btw, i have a one week old 2004 s2k. Thanks for your help!

I have the same noise (a lot of people do as far as I know). It was suggested to me to use Shinitzu grease on the seals of the top. I did, but it didn't take the noise away. I tried tightening the bolts which seemed to work, but it still rattles. Last thing I'm gonna try is to tighten the latches (there's some shims you can take out). Failing that, I guess it's gonna be something I have to live with... Drives me crazy!

I've not heard of Shinitzu grease. What is different about it, and where do you find it ??

(boy do you get a mixed bag if you google it)

i have the same ticking noise. it sounds when the roof is flexing regardless of the ground conditions. it's more annoying when it's cold. i hoping that it just needs to break in and will leave it alone for awhile. maybe a tsb will pop up , who knows

I had a sound that was exactly like this. Pretty much a clicking type of sound coming from the general hinge area right beside the driver/passengers' head. I futzed around with it for weeks and thought I had it figured out when I took off the little plastic trim pieces that are held on with a single screw on either side. Alas, the sound came back in short order . But after continued experimentation I finally isolated the cause and fixed it easily.

If you look at the hinge assembly from the inside you will notice a plastic "button" or knob on one of the links that one of the other links rests against when the roof is fully up and latched down. My clicking noise was being caused by the link shifting back and forth slightly on the plastic rest/knob. I just opened the roof partially and took small square pieces of adhesive backed felt and stuck them on the links, folded over the edges where they contact the plastic stops. Not a single click in the 2 1/2 months since . Am I ever glad too because that sound was seriously driving me crazy. It was the only interior rattle I've had so far. Give it a try.
