Default Tried everything, but still the hardtop rattle!

Hey guys,

I have tried everything to fix the hardtop rattle. I used shinetsu grease, tape EVERYTHING. I'm at the point now where I just drive with the softtop so I don't hear the rattle.

The rattle seems to be coming from the latches or near the latches. It's actually more of a squeaking sound when i hit bumps or dips in the road. Could it be something is loose?

Any input would be greatly appriciated. I don't have any gaps and the fitment is perfect.

Thanks in advance!

I've been getting this too -- I've greased the seals and shimmed the latches. My theory is that it has something to to do with the headliner. I may end up spraying some WD-40 in between the headliner and top. I've noticed it's worse after a rain -- I wonder if a little water is seeping in there and causing it.

I used shinetsu grease
But did you use it on the rubber seal that's just under the rear edge of the rear window? It's this that squeaks when you run over bumps and stuff. Also, your rear latch assembly may not have been adjusted properly when they were installed. Properly installed, those latches should be pulling the rear of the top down about 1/4" to compress that rear seal. This will lesson the amount of shifting when you go over bumps.

thanks for the tip! I'll check the rear assembly and see. But when I lock the rear down, It does move about 1/4" in the rear and locks down pretty tight. I'll try the grease again and see if that helps...

I'll keep ya informed

Hey viper,

It sounds like the sqeak is coming from the driver's side front latch. Any ideas on that?

If it's coming from the front latch area, you may have a couple things wrong.
The windshield catcher may be coming loose and you might need to go in there, take out the screws and Loctite them back in.
You may also need to grease that main windshield rubber seal that runs the whole edge of the windshield from door to door.
Or you may just have a top latch assembly that rattles. If this is the case, open up the latch and spray a little white lithium grease into the moving parts of the internal latch assembly.
If I were you, I'd start with the easy stuff. Do the striker screws last it the other things fail.

had same problem with my h/t.

luckily mine was still under warranty, (had to argue with the dealer re: accessories coverage under warranty) however it is not a real big deal. there are spacer/shims that are installed. they are 1mm thick and the "standard installation" uses three of them. do not know the pn but the dealer had to order them.

section 20-66, step 6 of the service manual describes the procedure and they are further illustrated on page 20-54.

they are installed between the hardtop strikers and the roof.

my rattles were actually climate sensitive. the warmer the outside temp, the more the rattle. i guess it was the car's way to tell me when it was warm enough to store the top.

maybe pm the hardtop guy. also hAnda.com has the intall instructions o/l.

good luck

ken

I had that problem. I just used some flexable clear plastic about 1/16 inch thick cut into 2 strips size 1/4 by 1/2 and glued them to the place where the latches lock on to the strickers and have had no probs or ratteling for 4 months. Getto but you cant see it and it fixed it!
