Post Interested in HPDE but don't have a rollbar?

added 3/28/2007 Good news, registration for the May 21 event is now open!

http://www.gws-mbca.org/dd_SummitPoint.html

The cost is $175 ($155 if you go to startech but it is still cheaper than a FAT which is $225).

IMPORTANT!!!!: When you fill out the .pdf registration form, fill it in and save it on your computer. You will then send an e-mail to Joe Wozney with the completed registration form as an attachment.

Let me say for the record that if you plan on running a lot of events you should get an approved rollbar along with 6 pt harness BUT....

a lot of folks have expressed an interest in running a HPDE but they can't because they do not have an external rollbar.

GWS Mercedes runs a 8 event autoX season and holds several HPDE each summer. This summer they are running 2 events at Summit point and one event at VIR that are open to all makes of vehicles.

The two Summit Point events are open to S2000s that do not have external rollbars. The events are held on:

May 21 (Summit point Main) *****REGISTRATION IS UP ON THE WEBSITE******

August 4-5 (Summit point Main)

They also have a June 14-15 event as VIR but that event does require external rollbar.

These HPDE are organized just like other local events (4 run groups ranging from beginner to advanced, instructors provided). You will get 4 twenty minute sessions per day, they have even run 5 sessions in the past which gives you more track time than any other HPDE in the area.

There are several local S2000 ownere who are attending these events. If interested you can PM me for more info or contact the head Mercede Driving guy directly:

Great. Email sent. How much do these things typically run? Should I invest in a set of track tires or will my Eagle GS-D3s be good enough? Do I need a helmet?

The GWS Mercedes HPDE are usually a little less $$$ than some other clubs events. You will be fine with the Goodyears. You should get your own helmet, however Mercedes does have some loaner helmets.

Good question, are r-compunds required, or at least a certain speed rating (not that any of us would be runniong crap tires), and a helmet w/ certain snell rating?

R compounds are not required and really not encouraged.

Good pads, and upgraded brake fluid are the mimimum requirement IMO.

Snell 2000 I think, some clubs allow M-helmets also
for a couple of reasons.

1) Driving on very sticky tires will not teach you to be a better driver.

2) Sticky tires will cause more stress on your suspension parts.

3) Sticky tires will allow you to go faster so that when a driver makes a mistake, the penalty may be much greater.

I assume my car isn't covered by my insurance when Im out there

What is a good place to get a helmet? Snell 2000 is higher than M Rating, right? So I am safe with a Snell 2000 helmet?

I have Porterfield R4-S pads, should I upgrade/change pads for the track event? What kind of fluid do you suggest (im due for a change this summer anyhow)?
