Pics of A/C filter or heat filter maintenance
Well I just replaced an a/c or heat filter at 37000 miles.
It was little overdue since the maintenance schedule calls for change the filter at 30000 miles normal and earlier in dusty condition.
None of the local dealers have it in stock so one of them special ordered for me.
Replacing it is a very easy task and if you have 20000 miles plus I recommend you to take a look at it to see what condition it is in.
To locate where it is,
First pop the hood, and pry open the corner of the plastic panel behind the battery passenger side like this.
Don't have to force it but firmly pry it open.
The small air filter will be seated like the one that is in last picture. Push the tab in and pull the filter housing out. Check out my dirty filter, yikes. It looks actually worse than pictured.
Close-up of the dirty filter to further gross you out.
Side by side view of dirty and clean filter.
Remove the dirty filter and put in the new filter in the housing. Do it right, you can't mess this up.
Ready to drop in the filter/housing.
Make sure the filter/housing is snapped in the right place.
And snap back in the panel and voila!
Theoretically now your air circulation and flow should be better than before.
Because of the exceptionally dirty ac/heat filter, I did experience some less air circulation when the weather is very cold and had a passenger with me breathing and fogging up the windows. I guess becaue of some restriction, I saw that the defogging action was doing less than a stellar job.
But in warmer days, who cares about the fan, yours and my top will be down in almost every drive.
But like I said, if you have 20000miles plus, do check out the condition of the filter and don't put up and procrastinate like I did. If you think it is dirty, replace it promptly.

Great info and pics! Your comment about top down driving makes me wonder whether it may prolong the life of the filter (or at least keep it cleaner until the prescribed replacement interval) to keep the system on recirculate and the fan off while driving top down.
Thanks 1RandyC for answering my question:

I can't believe how dirty that filter was. How often did you use your AC/heater??? I rarely use the heater or AC since the weather down here in So Cal is so mild.
Nice pictures on the install.
