Default Wideband O2 Sensors -- Who Sells / How Much? (ADVICE NEEDED)

Tales of the Turbo, Chapter 28, the O2 Sensor , the saga continues...

I'm coming to the conclusion that it's worth buying a wideband O2 sensor to do my own tuning, regardless of where I wind up in terms of fuel management -- sticking with the VAFC or switching to the GReddy eManage system or the AEM EMS. Without one, it's a bit like throwing darts in the dark (and the dyno costs get pretty steep). But the decision depends, in part, on cost and complexity.

Does anyone have suggestions for vendors? FJO Enterprises -- http://www.fjoinc.com/automotive/products.htm -- offers a unit for $750 *MRSP* which includes the sensor and a basic display. Adding a nicer display and datalogging capability runs the suggested price up to $1180. I'm wondering if there are other options, and (if FJO's the only decent source) whether anyone's got any experience with them or one of their dealers.

Thanks for your help and thanks, again, to those of you who've generously offered up your advice and support in numerous PM's, phonecalls, and prior threads. In particular (and in no particular order), thanks to BlackS2000Turbo, ChrisD, CJB80, GilbertG, HeCash, Rieger, RT, Schwett, TwoHoos, Ultimate Lurker, Wes, and YellowStreak.

CB,
You can get the FJO for more like $565 without the display. If you're running the EMS, you dont really need the display unless you just WANT it. I have an FJO on my EMS and it's nice dude. Call MVP and ask for Randy @ 817-439-4888. If you get a display monitor to go with it, then you're talking about $750. The $565 kit I bought came with the FJO sensor, the heater/controller, and bung, which you wont need. It's definately worth the cost. It let me enable automapping which for normal driving made the car a lot more driveable. I would highly suggest the FJO.

MOTEC has one for $1200ish I believe. CJB80 has one and knows the exact price. Good to know about the $565 without the display. Thanks Hams2000. -Anthony

I do not know if this will help but my new Greddy A/F Ratio Warning Meter comes with it's own 02 sensor that I will install in my test pipe. From my understanding it is really accurate with no bouncing of lights around the meter like Autometer and others. Hope this helps.

I have serious doubts that the Greddy product provides the responsivness and accuracy required to tune a car.

Ham, everyone seems to hate on the EMS, $10 bucks says he doesn't go with it!

The Motec PLM will allow you to it so that it will operate as if it were a stock O2 sensor, while still displaying the correct AFR.

Everyone that I have seen talk about it seems to like the FJO, go with that if you're looking to save money. Get the display though!

How about techedge? www.techedge.com.au You'll have to pick up your own sensor at www.thepartsbin.com.

Is there any advantage when using it with the stock ECU and Vortech unit ?

Chris (CJB80),

You're so right about hating on the EMS. The funny thing is that most people who are putting down are the ones who 1) do not own it and cannot speak from experience and 2) have no business trying to tune a motor. I personally love my EMS.

Hams2000 -

Are you all motor? I assume you've been able to squeeze a bit of power out of your setup with the EMS? I'm still in the desicion stages, but I'm really leaning towards all motor, and actually thinking of the e-manage (as would prefer not to replace the stock ecu altogether). And since you have one, does the wideband sensor make a big difference tuning, say, with a setup like headers, exhaust, intake, cams, and the other usual bits? I admit I don't know a lot about the tuning part where computers are concerned, but I do understand the fundamentals of engine tuning and it seems to me that using a wideband sensor and the e-manage in this situation could be the difference of in the neighborhood of ten hp or more. I have the hopes of squeezing the engine to the tune of 250-260 with a setup like this. Then maybe dropping the dough for the stroker (someday....)
