Burning Oil - Dealer disagrees
I went into one of my local dealers today. I picked my car up last week and after reading what you guys/girls have said about the car burning oil thought that I would buy some just incase.
I spoke to one of the service guys and he said,
a) should use only a fully synthetic oil
b) the car does not burn oil
Now I pointed out to him that I had it on good authority, over 2000 owners, that the S2k does burn oil. He insists that it will not and that you are all mistaken. So please can you place your comments so that I can pass this onto my dealer as he made me feel stupid when I told him I got it from a forum.
Also should the Stook be on fully synthetic oil, I am sure I read past posts that said that you should not use fully synthetic?? Now unsure what I should use when I need to top up.

Your dealer is an arse. Many of the cars owned on this site burned oil until they were broken in and the rings were seated. Use the search function to see the many stories of this. Mine burned oil until about 3500 miles, then stopped. The agreement here seems to be to use regular oil until the car is fully broken in (second oil change), then switch to synthetic if that's what you want.
From what I know and what I have experienced the VTec engines typically use a bit of oil. Mine used about a quart in the first 4k miles, and since has not used a noticable amount. I have heard of others whose engines never seem to "seal up" and use a bit of oil through the engines life with no ill effects.
The crap about synthetic oil is very wrong! This engine will be more than happy running regular oil changed at the intervals specefied in the manual. In fact putting synthetic in your car early in it's life is a bad thing to do. It does not allow your engine to wear properly. The whole concept of breaking in an engine is to allow the surfaces to wear so there are no irregularities. Most engines don't fully break in until 10k miles or so. This is the about the milage that I plan to switch to synthetics at. As always your milage and other opinions will vary, but there are few that recommend sythetics early in an engines life. Bring the manual in and show him the section on recommended oil and ask him if he knows better than the engineers that built the car.

* Do not change your oil until the recommended time or mileage interval shown in the maintenence schedule.
This would say under "normal" conditions you would change oil after 7,500 miles or 12 months. Under severe conditions 3,750 or 6 months (see your service schedule). Most here are conservative and operate in the "severe service schedule". Many have found the the F20C skirt rings (i.e. oil) actually take 5,000 miles to fully seat before no more oil consumption.
If your dealer doesn't believe it will consume oil then here is a very basic question: Have you ever heard of another car, any car, that the factory SPECIFIES to check the oil with each fill-up of gas?
Your car will consume oil and this is part of the natural break-in process. If your car is not fully seated then, and only then should you listen to a dealer. We have 2,214 members...how many S2000's has you dealer been involved with.

Oddly, you will find that some F20c's burn oil, some burn a little and some burn a lot. I have found it interesting how there is such a variation. I changed to Mobil 1 at 7k (my first change)miles and I MAYBE burned a quart along the way. Others have said that they burn a HELLUVA lot more oil than my car did. I think there is no way to say for sure, but one thing that I know is that every car seems to be different...
I would also say that dealers, most of the time, haven't got a clue about the S2000 and that I wouldn't count on them to provide you good information on the S2000's oil requirements, etc. I would take ALL of these opinions, like mine, and then make your decision. I had always thought that 3000 miles was too soon for the first change and I went against the tide and changed at 7000. Not a single problem in almost 27000 miles.
