Default RSX Sub makes poping sounds

Hey guys, I though you could help me out w/ getting my rsx sub to stop popping. It will pop in the following situations:
  • Turn Stereo On
  • Turn Stereo Off
  • Mute button
  • Turn volume all the way down
  • Change Source
  • Change radio preset (only AM/FM, not XM)

I tapped an ACC ON positive and hooked to a grounding bolt in the trunk. My head unit has one stereo RCA out and i ran that to the subs inputs.

any ideas would be helpful.

what are you using to trigger the sub to turn on? i'm guessing it is signaled via the RCA inputs.

this sounds like a symptom of a cheap quality amp that was used for the sub.

if you look at various amps that are sold most include a feature like "anti turn on thump" circuitry, etc. i'm guessing the BOSE sub doesn't have this... and thus whenever your sub detects a new source input, it turns on and you hear a little 'pop' as a result.

sorry, but there's probably no fix for this unless my guess is completely wrong. i'd be willing to say that i'm 75-90% sure that i'm right...

well, my guess is that the way it is origionally wired in the rsx, the head unit tells when to turn it on/off so there is not a seperated on/off lead. So the sub turns on when the car does. I'm pretty sure that it the cause of most of the problems. I don't know if my headunit has a seperate +12v out. I guess I should look and use that to power the sub.

you're aftermarket head unit will have a separate voltage output, but you do not want to use that lead to power the amp. it's the amp turn on lead but is generally rated to only supply .5 amps or so. you'll need to use that output to setup a relay that will feed your sub w/ a 12V input.

i am still not sure whether the sub gets triggered by detecting an audio signal (very common technique), or if it was powered via the OEM RSX head unit. i do know this much -- the connector for the sub has only power, ground, and audio signal -- there is no amp turn on lead that is usually found with other amps.

this thread is chuck full of info on that sub.

http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.p...t=RSX+subwoofer

do you have the sub wired to power up when starting the car?
otherwise it's idling constantly or switches on w/ a audio signal.. and the way to tell whether it is signal driven vs always on, is to use a multi-meter and measure current in the wire both when the stereo is on and playing and when the stereo is off, but the car is on.

until i get more info on the powering routing of the sub, i still stand by my previous conclusions... i highly suspect the amp powers up when it senses an audio signal.

How would i got about setting up a relay like that. I'm pretty good at following walkthroughs so i should be able to do it fine, just don't know how. I already have the sub all hooked up and it sounds fine except for the pops. Do you think that relay will fix the problem or could it be something else?

well, i'm not 100% sure the relay will address the popping issue, but if that sub idles 100% of the time, it could be a potential safety issue. the relay would assure that the amp is only powered when the head unit is on.
what did you do to provide power for the sub?

and before i can really address the popping issue, we need to determine why it is popping.

if the amp powers up w/ an audio signal and pops then, there may not be a lot that we can do, but we can surely try to eliminate it.

if the amp is constantly powered, then the popping is another issue entirely and we need to figure out why it pops. then, we can work on stopping the popping.

btw -- here's a thread on wiring neon lights in the footwells, but it covers how to wire a relay up to work...

if you need more specific instructions, just mention it...

Mac hooked yours up right? did he wire up a turn on lead?

i'm still of the belief that this is just the amp turning on when it detects an input signal.

for only twenty bucks you can have a sig line too
