Helmet Recommendations
What do you guys recommend for a helmet used for frequent AutoX'ing and occasional track visits? I am looking into buying a decent helmet that I could use in both events without complications. What's the best places to find good prices on helmets? I thought this would be appropriate under Racing and Competition since you guys know a lot about this topic. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

One recommendation: don't skimp. Safety is one area where you don't want to sacrifice quality for cost.
I have a G-Force full-face SA2000 helmet. It's nice, but for the $300 I spent, I think I could have gotten a higher quality helmet.

I could only go with an Arai (I got a big head)... it fit very nicely. However I spent 600 on my RX7 Corsair.
There are a bunch of autocross guys here that's using motocross helmets, and if you look carefully, some of them are Snell approved.

Don't skimp.I have a Bell Sport II full face SA95 helmet. I paid in the neighborhood of $300 for it. I like my helmet. It fits well (fit is VERY important in a helmet). I'm considering getting a new one because this one is getting a little long in the tooth at 3+ seasons, but until I find one that fits well I'm going to continue to use the one I've got.
Full face offers more versatility than an open face helmet. I use mine for karting as well as autocross. If you're ever going to log time in an open cockpit (no windshield) car, you'll need a full face helmet. On the flip side, open face helmets offer better vision and easier communication with others, which is good for instructing.

For what it is worth. I used to be the National Sales Manager for the MotorSports Division of Bell Helmets from 1983 to 1986. I have a "fair" understanding of how helmets work. And if anyone is interested in "My Opinions" I would be happy to share my knowledge of the basics of helmets and why a Snell Approval is so important.

The difference between motorcycle helmets and auto helmets is that auto helmets have a fire rating (nomex) and motorcycle helmets don't. That's part of the reason auto helmets cost more.
I have a snell full-face motorcycle helmet I got for about $150 which is a nice helmet but it's a bit heavy but comfortable.
Weight is important. Comfort is important. Fit is important. Don't just buy one online unless you've gone to a shop and tried them on. Price is a factor, spending more than $500 is probably excessive and don't buy features you don't need (radio, forced air ventilation, aerodynamics). Save those for when you're a pro and will actually use them.

Bell M2 as recommended by Kster. Happy with it so far. I tried on about 10 different styles before I went with the M2. What fits you best will depend on the shape of your head. The lighter the helmet (kevlar etc) the more you pay. From what I have been told, the decreased weight also mitigates neck strain and therefore increases the driver's experience. Difficult to judge unless you have tried both.
I know a few people wo have opted for open face style helmets. Generally an older design, and I believe you need eye protection to use an open face these days. A neck brace is also a useful aid to reduce the end of day fatigue. A nomex balaclava was also recommended to me.
