Default Need advice on cold air intake

I am thinking about upgrading my stock exhaust to cold air intake. Can someone tell me their expericence of it. How much hp do you really gain from it? Is it more for look or is it a worthy mod to have? BTW, how loud is it? Thanks in advance

Exhaust? You mean your stock air intake?

It's mostly just for the sound, and you *might* gain a couple of HP. I had an AEM CAI on my '01 and I never noticed a power difference.

It makes the car sound incredible during VTEC though.

I have the PRM intake which is not truely a CAI, as it stays under the hood. However, it does not have an open filter like most under the hood hot air intakes, and instead has a horn that is pointed directly where cold outside air enters the engine area. The horsepower gains are not much, at least from the drivers seat its hard for me to tell. In my opinion the reason to get them is because of sound. This car sounds AMAZING with this intake. When driving normally it is dead quiet, just like stock, but put the pedal to the floor and she growls! Keep it to the floor and hit VTEC and it will make the hairs stand up on your neck. It's my favorite mod on my car, I absolutely love it!

Also, I dont have to worry about hydrolock with this intake, and it was CAKE to install. Only took about 2 hours, and that was taking my good old time. You can see pics by clicking my WWW button.

I think you'll love the sound of any intake, but give PRM a look.

Weapon- R is another option Cheap $145 shipped, great sound , no chance of hydrolock! Quick 15 minute install if you're mechanically inclined. With any intake on an S2000 you won't get any significant power increase. Even with a true cold air intake with maybe a four horsepower gain, are you gonna be able to feel four horsepower. I don't think so . The meaner sound especially at VTEC gives the illusion of power. It's about looks , sound and price. Do some good research and then make up your mind. Also check the S2000 library and go into product reviews to see what other owners think. BTW the short ram style of intakes have a louder and meaner sound VS. the cold air intakes.

I have the V2 AEM on mine and there was little or no power/torque gain. Like everyone else said, it's all about the noise. The V2 may not be as loud as the V1, but it is definitely deeper. I too love the sound of hitting vtec now. Install was a little tricky, but at least I know I will still get cooler air on the 100+ degree days in Texas.

Hondo:

If you are really bored like me, you might consider what I did. Kept the stock box, put in an K&N, scored and knocked out the baffle, shimmed out the divider between grill top and radiator brace, constructed a flexible intake out of sheet metal stips and foil covered insulating material to the stock horn from the resulting opening to the grill, ran some 3" flex pipe from the hole in the pax side fender well to a hole I cut in the left side of the airbox, and made a flapper valve out of light, soft plastic to close this opening when the one to the grill went into "ram air." Then, I insulated the inside of the airbox and the stock tube from filter to throttle body with foil covered insulation material. Used a lot of foil tape, double sided carpet tape, and thick rubber adhesive tape.

The cost was minimal. The result was just what I wanted. Run the engine to 2K rpm, engage the clutch, press the accelerator, and leave the traffic behind. Very good 3k rpm to 6K rpm pull. No reduction in pull above 6K. No additional engine sound, except for a soft "whine" at idle. Makes people think I have a supercharger, and leave me alone!

Thanks,
Richard

I'm with Richard. Here's an earlier shot of my installation without the interior of the modified airbox being lined with thermal insulation. An Italian made Sprint air filter is used. There is also a mini-radmat, Coastal Metals engine bay accessory, and an oil catch tank in the mix here:
