Interesting findings about JL 300/4 and the S2000 Stealthbox
I know that meny of you are not huge fans of JL stuff, but for those that are using or planning to use the 300/4 amp to power a stealthbox and front components, I have figured out a way to get all the power out of the amp.
If you are familiar with the power regulation that JL uses in this amp, you know that it has only one power supply for all four channels. If you connect a set of front components (wired stereo 4 ohms to channels 1&2) and a stealthbox (bridged 3 ohms across channels 3&4), the amp restricts the power to the fronts to 28x2, while the sub still gets 150 watts. This is detailed in the manual that can be downloaded from http://www.jlaudio.com/amps/pdfs/300_4_MAN.pdf
Using the chart in the manual, it shows that the optimal configuration is 4 ohm components and an 8 ohm load bridged across 3&4 to get 75x2 to the front and 150x1 to the sub. The sub that comes in the stealthbox is a 10W3v2-D6. Basically a dual 6 ohm voice coil sub. JL also makes a 10W3v2-D4, a dual 4 ohm sub. This driver can be wired to the optimal 8 ohms. I contacted JL and they said that the dealer can order the unit this way, or it can be swapped out at the shop. They also agreed that this is a good idea. My dealer has chosen to swap the driver at the shop, as my order has already been placed.
If you already have a stealthbox, it can be wired to 12ohms if you like. Check the diagram in the amp manual for details, but you get 75x2 and 100x1 in this configuration.
