Vermont Weekend Drive and Overnight - July 10th/11th
Ride-Name: GMT 2004 (Green Mountain Tour 2004)
Please go here for some pictures of the scouting trip (or see page 2 of this thread): http://s2k.ruin.org/jmr/Scouting%20Trip/
Here are some links to various places in Vermont that we will be able to check out on the ride:
Town of Woodstock - "quaint" tourist-trap (but very pretty). http://www.woodstockvt.com/
Waterbury - A nice place (and there's a Ben & Jerry's factory!) http://summer.stowe.com/
The alpine slide (might be a refreshing break on Sunday) http://www.bromley.com/
Route/Timeline
Saturday July 10th
We will start on Saturday, July 10th in Springfield, VT (we moved the starting location further North due to the length of Saturday's drive - figured people could cruise up I-91 faster alone than together).
For those who are interested in coming up Friday July 9th and staying overnight , there is a Holiday Inn Express across the street from our meeting place. They are offering us rooms at a rate of $109+taxes for Friday night (still expensive
) http://www.vermonthi.com/. If you have any trouble getting the $109 rate, please let me know and I will call the manager there.
Lastly, I could offer a couple people accomodations at my place if anyone is interested (first-come, first-serve). I likely have enough room to house 2 couples and one single person (slot already taken).
On Saturday I expect people to start arriving around 10am and leave Springfield at 11am. We will be meeting at the truck-stop right off of I-91, Vermont Exit 7.

From the truck stop we will be following Route 5 North, along the Conn. River to Ascutney. We will take a left and head West along Route 131 until we reach the intersection of Route 106. At this point there is a place where we should all be able to find food (burgers, hotdogs, chicken, etc) - outdoor dining (hope it isn't raining... if it is I will have alternate plans). The place is reasonable on $, expect about a max of $10/person. I estimate we will be here about noontime. There will be a chance to fuel up and restrooms here.

After we eat the ride will continue West along Route 131 and eventually land us in Ludlow, VT (the base of Okemo ski mountain). From here we will head North on Route 100 past several lakes and nice scenic views. A right onto Route 4 East will bring us into Woodstock, VT where there will be another opportunity for gas and restrooms. It should be about 2pm now.

The route will head North out of Woodstock on Route 12 until we reach Route 107. Then it will turn West to, once again, catch Route 100 North. We will follow Route 100 North all the way into Waterbury, VT to arrive about 5pm. Josh will post some information about a Ben & Jerry's tour and we also have the Cider Mill to check out. At this point some people will break and head to their hotel/campground. I imagine several of us will meet up that evening for food and/or drinks at a local resturant (leaving this open for those who are interested to decide at the time; however there are several possibilities).
For those interested in camping out overnight, there is the Little River state park in Waterbury. Their website is at http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/littleriver.cfm. The costs appears to be:
$5 Reservation Fee
$16 per night, for a tent-area, minimum 2 nights reservation.
$37 TOTAL
For those who do not want to spend the night lying on tree-roots, I would recommend a hotel stay in Waterbury (slightly less expensive than Stowe...). The Best Western seems to be available with some rooms (going fast) for that night. The group-rate that they can give us is $109.95 + taxes. There are currently twelve rooms blocked off for us and the reservations need to be made by July 1, 2004. This rate includes use of their facilities (pool, hottub, fitness center, etc) and a continential breakfast. Those interested in this rate should refer to the "Honda S2000 Car Show Group Block (S2000)". The hotel's phone number is 802-244-7822. The website is http://www.bestwesternwaterburystowe.com/.
Sunday - July 11th
Sunday morning I expect that some of us will meet for breakfast (to be determined on the trip). At 9am we will meet, assuming we are not all already at Breakfast together, at the Ben & Jerry's parking lot for a 10am departure.
South From Waterbury we will follow Route 100B, then Route 100 back to Route 17 West. Route 17 is an INCREDIBLE road in the middle of VT with several amazing hairpins. The road itself climbs up over the mountain and back down the other side. We will be stopping at the top (parking-area) to let those interested take pictures and make a few fun runs up/down the road. This should be about 10:30-10:45ish.

We will continue along Route 17 West until we hit Route 116 South. A left onto this route will bring us to Route 7. A right onto Route 7 will have us heading North until we can take Route 30 South out of Middlebury, VT. From here we will follow Route 30 South all the way into Manchester, VT. At this point we will stop for lunch - a nice sandwich place. We should be here about 1pm.
From here I expect that some people will head home; however I would encourage everyone to join us on the Bromley Alpine Slide (about a 15 minute drive from lunch). For those of you that have never been, or have no idea, the Alpine slide is basically a half-pipe a couple feet in diameter. You go to the top of a mountain, get in a sled that simply has a brake and slide down. Great fun! After this, we will part our seperate ways.
Josh and I are hopeful that this ride will have a little bit of interest for everyone. There are some incredible twisty roads for those who like to drive and drift. There are some incredible views (ie: cows, lakes, mountains, forests, waterfalls, etc) for those who just want to enjoy the Vermont scenery.
Things to remember
Sunblock...hopefully we will need this!!
2-Way radios...if you have an extra, please bring it for someone else.
Cameras...some parts of the ride are VERY photogenic!
Change of Clothing for the Overnight.
Tent/Camping supplies if you will be staying at the campground.
SHIRTS SHIRTS SHIRTS!
Josh has a post about shirts being made. (Thanks for the work on this!). Please see his post on page 3 of this thread.

jmrobins! We're thinking of taking this ride. Can you list me and a passenger as a possible? I'll need to check my work schedule, but the date looks free. There are some terrific routes in that part of Vermont and an overnight stay in the Stowe area sounds like a good time. You planning a B&B stay (depending upon how many show) or a No Tell Motel? We might even do the "scouting" ride with you on the 30th, but being Mem Day Weekend, there will probably be a lot of police out...
Going anywhere in VT takes a long time. Usually from Brat to Stowe on Rt. 100 expect 5-6 hours dirive time. Might want to do just half of state. North/south or West along shore of lake Champlain, take car ferry over to the Empire State down thru Lake George/Fort Ticondiroga. Can't join you that weekend but sure it will be great.

I agree with you that it will be a long drive (I guess that's what I am used to, and was shooting for). Maybe we can modify the plans on Sunday to do the ferry-ride and head down in NY as you suggested. Thanks!

Rick and I may be free that weekend as well. We'll watch the thread for the information. If we attend, we'd be heading up on Friday evening and would look for suggestions as far as places to stay.
Thanks!
Thanks!
