First time rider should purchase the most HP they can afford. The less experience you have the more power you need. If money

Looks like you want to go new rather than used. I would recommend going used for your first bike, because it is almost a guarantee that you are going to do something to scuff it up, and with used it hurts the pocket less if you really wad it up good. Used parts are also more available from boneyards on less that current model year bikes. It doesn't have to be major accident that screws up your bike, simple stupid cr@p like parking on fresh asphalt can lead to a fallover in a parking lot that costs hundreds. Learn your lessons on a cheap yet cool used bike and save your money for what you find you really want after getting into the sport and picking up the knowledge that will keep it in decent condition

For the price range you are talking about you should be able to buy 2 600F4i's Out here in MD 2000-2002 F4i's go for $4000 to $5000, depending on mileage and condition (garaged or not, pristine vs repaired) Lots of people have more money than time, and decent bikes with 2500 miles can be found

I feel the F4i is a more stable bike than the R6, but I have not tried the 2003 or 2004 R6, none of my friends have one. The R6 is lighter feeling and quicker steering, but not as easy to ride. If you are looking at a 600R, it has better ergonomics than the F4i, and is easier to learn on. Definately better ergos than the R6. Of course I'm 6'2", so it could be different for you.

Just my $.02, I am shopping used 600's right now

Are you looking to definately buy new? I'm looking for a bike right now too and I'm looking for a CBR600F2-F3(maybe F4for the right price) for my first bike. I'd love to get a 600RR or R6 but I know I'm going to drop it and some point in time so I want get most of my learning done on a "beater" of sorts. I think an F2-F3 can be had for ~2k-4k easily, that leaves money to buy good gear which I feel is very important.
Just my $.02, GL on finding a bike you like.

My best suggestion would be NOT to get a 600. I was dead set on getting an r6 for a first bike, and after much consideration and posts from www.sportbikes.net, decided not to.

I ended up with a NEW 2003 Kawasaki Ninja 500. Excellent first bike choice,
1. it's new
2. enough power for a newbie
3. if i drop it, I won't cry for a week
4. won't kill myself on it (r6 is a deathtrap for new riders)

My best suggestion, take the MSF course in your area, get a 500 cc, and some good gear:
leather jacket, good helmet, boots and gloves.

mind you these are only suggestions, but if you go to the link I listed above I think it will help you make the right choice.

A 600 is fine to start on and the F4/F4i are the most friendly of the 600s. No offense, but the Ninja 500 is an ugly, chick bike (as opposed to a bike for ugly chicks.) Take the MSF course, read "Proficient Motorcycling,

I have been on bikes since I was 6 and see way to many people on bikes they should not be on.

I don't think there is a "sport bike" that would make a good starter bike.... a Ninja 250 or 500EX like stated above. they look ghey, but at least they are light and not manic fast.

I think 250's do a 14.0 Qtr mile and 500EX's do about 12.8ish in the Qtr.... still plenty fast to kill yourself, but nothing close to a 600 with a trap speed of 120+ mph.

I actually rode a GPZ305 for about 2 years in college.... it had a fairing, red paint, looked nice...reasonably fast.... my buddy had a FT ascot500 which was very similar.....

Once you learn that people will pull in front of you all the time and that you are not invincible that is when you upgrade to a nice 600.... I had a GSXR600 at some point.....

goodluck...post back what you decide..... Almost nothing is slow these days when it comes to motorcyles....

Go naked. SV650 comes to mind. Lightweight, torquey and cheap.

I learned on a GPz305 too. Brings back memories. back then, there weren't many cars doing 14 sec quarters, so it was fast enough to keep you ahead of traffic around town.
