Default Subwoofer placement Trunk vs. Interior

First of all, the reason why SPL competitors put subs IN the front stage, is that that is where the mic goes. Ive done a number of these competitions. Second, for SPL, you want a larger enclosure, which is the trunk....not the inside of a door....

The resonance of a trunk in a vehicle is much cleaner and tighter than the interior.

Just like tweeters, they cannot be too close to you, or else they sound like crap.

Another point, yes, I know a few people who built a false wall for their in home theaters, to place the subs into. It provides a MUCH more realistic feel (in movies.)

In cabin subwoofers are your cup of tea, more power to you. I for one, do not think that its the proper way.

Good topic,
I am really considering putting a 10 inch or 12 inch driver in the front passenger footwell. It seems really innovative, plus I would like to keep the trunk space. I would like to discuss this topic till we kill it a few times.
The major problem I have run into is finding the right driver to fit. Although haven't started cutting yet, I want to find the right driver first. Using Modifry's specs, I am going by that as my template. I haven't seen any specs on any other installs, so by keeping with the 5.5 inch mounting depth, choices are a bit limited. Some of the drivers I have been looking at:

CDT-m100--very decent driver, don't think they sell this one anymore
Blaupunkt ODW1000--saucer style, slim mounting depth
Bazooka RXT2---triangle sub
Illusion Audio ND-10--good luck trying to find these, OUT OF BUSINESS, i even contacted a Canadian company, they have a few 5 inch drivers left
-any more suggestions-

i've had both in cabin and trunk.
I prefer in cabin for SQ. Pretty much without exception.

but with all the supermodels look-a-likes i tote around in my car (believe me, some of them are quite tall) i cannot afford the space. so my sub is in the trunk, where it belongs, in an S.

but for those willing to innovate at the expense of their leggy passengers, more power to ya.

Morel (Israel), Dynaudio, Phase Linear, Altomobile and Earthquake all make shallow mount 9" or 10" drivers. Pioneer makes a 12" in their Elite line.

I don't have any personal experience with these products. I found out about them through internet searching back when I wanted to put something in the footwell. Later I changed my mind.

In the process of in-cabin subwoofer setup as we speak(coming from a previous IASCA SQ competitor and professional installer before graduating from college and getting a real job, this was always pleasing to me in other vehicles I have built)......using JL Audio 10" W3 version 2......modifying Modifry's setup......pics and more discussion up over weekend.......tried Alpine Type R 12" in sealed trunk enclosure, Kicker 8L7 vented trunk enclosure, JL 10W3 version 2 sealed trunk enclosure and was dissatisfied with all.....either too much rattle or not enough bass transfer into cabin....tried removing tray under top and was not pleased with appearance when looking through rear window.......hope this pleases me.....I am taking detailed pieces and saving my templates so future installers can do this easier/quicker.....

In cabin sounds much better in the S.

If you look at the top SQ cars in IASCA/USAC lanes, you'll see that up front subs are very popular...

For those who haven't seen it, here's my up front sub install: http://www.damnloud.com/s2000/10w3v2.html

BUMP, Keeping the topic alive.

Thanks for the addition with the drivers. Seems like my choices are not so limited anymore. I am getting very curious about that Pioneer 12 incher. It might work, just maybe...

A friend described it to me once that for SQ, speciffically at the competition level, putting subs and speakers in front of you was the goal.

You're looking for a sound like you were really at a concert. How many of you go to a concert and turn your back to the speakers? That's fundamentally what you're doing by placing speakers behind you.

But if you're looking for SQ above all, you may have chose the wrong car to do it in by choosing the S2000.
