I have been thinking about doing this for a couple years, as I knew it would be much better holder than the original. Finally did it. No drilling. No new holes. Out of the way of the gear shift lever. Out of the way of the passenger when not in use. And, not a big deal when in use with a passenger.

Simply remove the upper left plastic net attachment. Reuse the same screw. This one screw holds the cup holder just fine. If in doubt, add a second screw. Insert a small thick washer in place of the plastic net holder; place it in back of the upper right screw hole in the cup holder. This gives the net loop something to ride on. I've include a photo of the washer I used in the 3rd photo.

 

I forgot to mention the side prongs are expandable sideways. I like to carry bottle water when driving with the top down but for those into Super Size it should work..... I'd add the second screw if you do that.

 

Nice, I may have to pick one up. I hate trying to drive with a water bottle in the current cupholder.

I think this guy just puts stickers on them and sells them for $13, but they have a nice polished finish it looks like.

 

I had that cup holder on my Miata for some time...it tends to flex quite a bit under the weight of a sport bottle (24oz?) size water.

I used a very slick stainless with leather strap bicycle water bottle cage in the same spot on the passenger side of the trans tunnel.

Works like a charm - without water or coffee in there it holds my sunglass case nicely too.

Good find. I prefer the plain black as it's more fitting IMO with the rest of the car.

 

Actually I've had the same cup holder in a Maxima for 15 years! Still have the same, so they are pretty good quality. I don't carry anything larger than the normal 16 oz bottles normally. Sounds like there are other options that work.

I have seen others post different varities of cup holders on this site but I always felt this collapsible style would work the best.
