How about seating it a quarter inch lower by drilling another hole into it a bit higher then the one you used to fix it in place. That way it doesn't sit on top of the bright red leather part?

I've had this for a month now and it is perfect. Any size cup has fit in there and it grips them. I've gone through twisties and drove spiritedly on the freeway with no spills. I would recommend this to anyone. Best cup holder ever!
