SAN DIEGO -- California Highway Patrol officers will soon use radar to catch speeders on all local freeways, authorities said.
The CHP currently uses radar enforcement only on Interstates 5 and 15, but radar will be used on all area freeways starting Oct. 28, CHP Officer Mark Gregg said.
"Speeding remains the top reason for collisions, both statewide and locally," said Capt. John Bailey, Commander of the San Diego Area CHP office.
So far this year, San Diego CHP officers have investigated 2,568 speed-related collisions on local freeways. Last year, the San Diego Area CHP investigated 3,672 speed-related collisions, Gregg said.
The CHP will conduct a 30-day radar awareness campaign starting Thursday. Motorists may be issued verbal warnings for speeding -- but they could also be issued citations, Gregg said.
