S2000 Type R vs S2000 Type S (Soft)
A few months ago there was an extensive thread about the need for a Type R version and all the goodies everybody would want on this version. Even though the Type R is the version that I would want, I have a sneaking suspicion that the version we are going to get is the Type S (soft) version. Honda
The US doesn't get the civic type-R, the nsx type-R, the RSX type-R, and we intermitently got the ITR for a couple years. Why would we get the STR...I think the most likely type-r to hit the US is the RSX type-R, but even that won't be until '04ish. The possibility that honda produces an STR does exist, but more likely than not it'll be like all the other type-Rs and not grace the American soil with its presence. If it does hit japan, it still wouldn't be for a couple years after that it would cross the pacific...so maybe like an '06 S2000 type-R has a small chance of happening.
The F20c engine, displacement and design is certainly the maximum in can produce at this moment. Last time I recall, if Honda wants to do anything to produce what seems to be an "R version" then increasing the displacement will be the first thing, and if you increase the displacement it will no longer be an S2000.
If you've done your homework about how the S2K was engineered, researched, built and finally concepted then constructed. You should be probably aware that this seems merely a speculation. And the fact is, your engine happens to be red. Which is an important note here, since Honda will not simply apply red on a normal engine block ... And red happens to mean "R", I cannot understand how another "R" can or will be produce.
What we will be looking at will be enhancements, and more enhancements if possible so to a certain degree of impact not to overdo and spoil the original design and concept of the S2K. That is significantly reflected with the 02 version with the introduction of rear glass window, upgraded speakers, better clutch to handle the high revs and visual enhancements all round. That will no doubt be the trend and I cannot nor imagine Honda to have a different engine version for the same model lineup, it's just never been done because we already have an "R" engine block.
