Default The RR Journals: Another tranny lube rec

First, a disclaimer. Molakule is purveyor of this product, and he has a solid rep on BITOG. I tried the MTL-P product (paid for at retail - not a freebie) and think it is terrific, especially after about 500 miles of "run-in".

But.....
1) The price has gone up a lot in a short time
2) I wrote 2 or 3 PM's to the website, and never got so much as a howdy-do response. My questions were specific to the use/compatibility in the S2000. So the Customer Service scores a 1. They did ship quickly however.
3) The stuff is purple - well, lavender, they say. I hate fluids that are not OE colored, as it makes for all sorts of possible hassles scenarios with the dealership.
4) It is not night and day superior to GMSFM - my previous favorite. So do not groan and whine or feel slighted if you just did a GMSFM fluid swap - progress is ongoing, buckos.

************************************************** ****************

Still, I try to be fair, and in fairness, this is the best tranny oil I have used. It took about 500 miles to become "golden" - perhaps the lighter carrier oil had to burn off, perhaps the CF synchros (on the 2004+ MY's) needed to soak it up, who knows? (One of those unanswered questions....get it?).

The base stocks are PAO and esters; no expense spared there. Add pack seems optimal, as the shift quality and feel are unsurpassed, especially when the box is warmed up. I can heel N' toe with complete confidence that I am slotted in right, and even with a shorty Voodoo shifter, I have not "beat the synchros" yet. Even the dreaded 1-2 cold shift is better (I still recommend double-clutching until the the tranny warms up, but that is for another day, another post).

The stuff you want is MTL-P. It is a 75w85 vis lube. Unlike Honda HG (as best I can tell - AHM does not publish specs for us mortals), SF's product has EP additives, but they are safe for yellow metals.

Shift quality is outstanding - precise, not too notchy, and the formulation and add pack suggest this fluid will stand up to many miles, high revs, and track use well. I have not seen a UOA on it, and since I only put on 900 miles a year on my car, do not hold your breath. I did run some quick tests in thre Lab on it, and looked at it on a blotter, and all seemed well from a high level. It is the real deal.

So while I am not happy at being ignored, neither did I ask for special attention, and at the end of the day, the product stands on its own merits.

Molakule, was it something i said? :-)

Thanks Road Rage. The price doesn't seem too steep compared to some of our other options!
Some questions though:
1. What is Honda MTL HG?
2. Why did you choose MTL-P over their new Synchroglide product to try?
BTW...I haven't seen any UOA's on transmission lube on this site. Maybe I'll submit a GMSMFM sample on my next change. Thanks again for your work and time.

I've got the MTL-P in my transmission as well. Agree with RR on all counts of better shift quality in the notchy areas of the cold 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

By the by, on the few exchanges I've had with Molakule/Specialty Formulations, they informed me that there is a MTL-P formulation that does NOT have the lavender dye. This however is not published on their website and is done only by request.

Costumer service has improved
They replyed within 36 hours.
Order is placed.
After reading about the Honda MTF on BITOG and it shearing down to a 20 weight I hope the MTL-P will work fine in my 118500 km old transmission.
Thanks for the tip RR.
