aluminum exhaust piping?
I was wondering why you never (at least I havnt) see aluminum piping for exhaust systems. Its light and cheap. I would guess the welding mgith be an issue since it doesnt use a conventional mig welder. Does it have to do with the exhaust gasses being too hot for the material? If so, cant you just use Jet hot coating on the inside?
I would really like to know more about this issue.

it has been done before but i think it has to be done further down the exhaust. since the melting temp of say the most common in the US 6061 AL is about 600 degrees C, about 1000 degrees F?, the exhaust gass temps i think can reach that. or close to it resulting in a melted or weakened exhaust if extended periods of high temp gasses are made. so the best thing you can do is have AL mufflers/ piping half way down the exhaust where hopefully the gasses have cooled to less than say 300degrees C to be safe, maybe up to 400. in anycase it is a reliability/durability issue with AL and heat.
It is light.
If you want to make it just as strong as stainless or titanium it would most likely become heavy again.
And the special coating makes it more expensive.
So the two advantages are gone.
IMO.

In theory just about everything is possible
The coating would have to be a pretty good thermal insulator.
Why dont you make a thin layer of titanium inside the alu exhaust to insulate...... ohh wait.. you might them want to skip the alu all together and make the titanium a bit thicker because you lost some weight of the alu... we are getting there
But is it theoretically possible to coat the inside and prevent it from melting?

Not recommended for exhaust. Aluminum melts and corrodes too.
