Engine Rattles
Yes, I suppose when cold the engine will rattle for a moment before the hydraulics settle down but my 6k engine rattles on tickover for about three minutes before everything is quiet. Do I have anything to worry about or is this normal on a car with such low mileage.
Has the S got hydraulic tappets? ( I guess it has )
I have had problems with these on other cars before if you get a bad one it ticks/clicks for a while then eventually when the oil gets into them they go quiet.
If they leak they can make noise on a cold start.
As P 1 says id get it checked out. I dont think id like to rev to 9K
on a bad tappet.

There are / can be 2 rattles.
The top one is typically tappets and the bottom one (audible 1st thing) can be the cam chain pretensioner. My tappets definately need adjusting and so I'll get the tensioner swapped at the same time.

i suppose the injectors make a sort of rattling noise too. more ticking i suppose.
you'll notice this most when next to a wall in the car
i've always thought it's easy to tell a normal noise from a bad one. all 'tuned' cars have sharp lobes on the cams and that means generally more ropey sounding at lower revs.. they sound harsh to me but not knackered.

The noise may mean they need adjusting (most wear and therefore need for adjustment will occur early in the engines life). My 96k S2000 is silent and very smooth 1 second after a cold start.
