Default Weird ticking noise between 3-4k rpm

Hi All,

Just before i start - I have used the search function extensively to try and find another thread with a similar issue.

Have a bit of an odd problem. I can hear a faint ticking noise between 3-4k rpm generally at lower speeds which appears to be coming from the front of the car. I would say the sound is like the 'card in bicycle spokes' sound. It is quite faint like you have to wind up the windows and gently accelerate or hold the revs between 3-4k.

I thought it might be the chain tensioner so i replaced this. It did not resolve the issue.

I took the car to honda, who said they used to a mechanics stethoscope and found that the noise was coming from the gearbox!

The gearbox works and performs fine though, apart from the slightly annoying sound there is no problem with the car.

I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with their gearbox?

Thanks,

Do you find that sound is more pronounced when driving next to a wall with the windows and/or top down? The injectors in the S2000 are very noisey and have generated lots of posts like this one with owners all mentioning a very similar sound. The injector noise is usually par for the course and can be lumped into the "weird noises" of the S2000.

if you've already replaced the tensioner, i think the next cheapest thing to do, is a valve adjustment.

Not much of a gearbox expert myself, but just curious... do you hear the sound only when you're in gear? If not, do you hear it with the clutch pedal depressed or only with the clutch pedal up? If you only hear it while in gear, does it happen in all gears?

Oh, and do you have any reason to doubt that the sound actually is coming from the gearbox. Not sure how trustworthy your Honda techs are.

valve adjustment was done at 80,000kms. I'm at 100,000 kms at the moment. problem appeared about hrmm.......70,000?

should i go another valve adjustment?

the noise is heard when driving along on a road, so its not happening when only next to walls etc.

My honda techs at the old honda dealership were twats! thats why i'm posting on here to see if anyone has any ideas.

i can hear the noise generally when the car is in gear. Its faint but there, you have to go on a nice flat road and hold the revs low. in higher revs the engine noise drowns it out

can valve damage create a similar noise; say from overrev or something?

I have had that same sound as well since new it seems. And like another poster said....the sound reverberates when you get close to the guardrails or another car. No idea what it is but my car runs fine. Hope its not really a problem, and mine is an '06 with 3900 miles on it.

GPmike, no its not a problem i can live with it if thats the noise that it does make but i guess i just wanted to check and see; the last thing i want is for it to turn into a problem.

I guess i'll just live with it and if something does go wrong then i'll look at it then!

anyone else get this same issue?

The Lost Motion Assemblies in the head can tick too.

Too hard to work out what the issue is without hearing it and doing all the tests.

I remember some previous posts that mentioned a sound similar to this and it turned out to be some sort of sticker (tag) attached to a drive belt. Worth a check.
