Progress on Rick's custom Garmin Nuvi mount
Update, 4-7-07
I've now removed the foam form from the plastic rail and cut the opening for the Nuvi. I've also appiled resin to the foam to prep it for the next steps required to complete the prototype for molding. At this stage it doesn't look like much, and it will require several weeks of additional work to get it read for molding, but I thought all of those following the thread would like to see photos of the latest progress. The surface is very rough at this stage, but that will be taken care of later. And the fitting of the Nuvi is also rough, but where I want it to be at this stage. Here's a photo of what I've got now:

Here are some new photos of the evolving shape of the adapter. I've strived for a more graceful and smooth transition from the stock piece than was the case with the old Street Pilot III installed pictured further below.
This time I painted the foam black to better approximate final appearance. Next I will cut out the mounting space for the Nuvi itself. Final contouring of the shape will be done with the Nuvi in place. Although it's not clear in the photos, the line of sight in the driver's seat is very good, about the same as with the old Street Pilot III install.

This weekend I'll also begin work on the V1 adpater for the passenger side.
Our manufacturing source is in the Far East and won't be back until the weekend, so extensive discussions of manufacturing issues cannot happen until then.
Old thread:
About a year ago we announced plans to make a custom mount for the Garmin Nuvi and 2720. The idea was to create an adapter that would mount into the area filled by the sunshade, using the same mounting points. We were counting on help from the engineering design program an OSU-Okmulgee, since they had all the hardware and other technologies required to design and manufacture the adapter. Unfortunately, changes in the leadership of the department sidetracked our project, and nothing ever happened.
Last month we decided to try to move ahead on our own. Since the Garmin Nuvi technology and product offerings have improved dramatically in a year, we

thank you for doin the r and d for everyone. i know it's not remotely close to easy.
should users still be concerned about theives breaking in and stealing the expensive unit from inside the mount?

Emil, I think $350 is too high a price -- we'll get to something half that, I hope.
