Default wetsand/colorsand my bb

I got a brand new paintjob on the entire right side of my car including the rear and front bumpers. I took it to BMW's collision center and when i got the car, there was orange peel all over the paint! I asked the service writer if they could colorsand it and they said "Of course its part of the repair we just didnt know if you would like it done". They said it would take another week. I couldnt stand being without my car again. So i decided to just colorsand it myself.

I started a 2000 grit dry on a DA and then went to 3000 grit wet to finish up. Here are some progress pics. There still are some areas needed to be sanded and touched up. I already did the quarter panel and cut and buffed it. Ill show pics tomorrow when i finish the buffing. Its too dark to see anything so ill finish tomorrow.

Using the 3000 grit wet on a DA really reduces your buffing time by a lot!

Looks scary, keep us posted with pics. Have you done this before, you don't seem at all worried.

Is the orange peel in the clear or the paint? The paint should have been sanded/leveled before the clear went down.

I've always wondered about this too... is there any way to tell where the orange peel is coming from BEFORE you start wetsanding?

It can happen in either the primer, base or clear coat or all three and is hard to tell which it is. You always hope it's in your clear.

your right the primer could have peel too, but if it was the primer the clear coat would be almost impossible to level. It would probably level with the base coat if it kept building on from the primer. Luckily for me it was the clear coat. Even if it was the base coat the clear is still able to level and it would be just as clear because the light wont refract off the base coat, only the clear.

I just finished the cutting and buffing. Here are the finished pics! There are still some spots to buff out but the majority of it is well above my expectations. Dont mind the specs on the paint, its just dust. and yes i have done this before lol.

mirror finish!

Wow nice job. Was wondering what kind of buffer did you use and type of polishes?

Very nice! Looks like there's very little orange peel left. I'm also curious to know what products you used for buffing out your paint...
