FAILED TORSEN.
Hey all. as you well know im a huge proponent of the CDV in the AP2. i have sworn i would never break a diff case. i do heated tire launches on rough pave at 6-7 K RPM as consistently as you drink water. ive been trying to break this thing since i bought it.
Stock diff+ stage 2 clutch setup, 400/400. LE607 changed in at 2k miles. and then changed again at 25k miles. well, the car has 61K miles and we finally see some damage. over 3500 clutch drops on every surface you can imagine, and what i think did the differential in, was all the sidesteps during drifts, brodies, and slides.
The other nite i launched it at 6k and had serious wheelhop, but wasnt about to lose to a turbo'd RSX type S.
so i stayed in it, and im thinking thats the straw that broke the camel in this case.
Everything inside looks perfect, except the teeth on the torsen augers. they are chipped up, and have been slowly grubbing away at the inside of the diff case. when it went, the car had a neat clicking sound at any speed, and especially during lowspeed decel, and turns.
Time to go OS GIKEN!!!!! hehehe. im gonna bolt in another for now, then do a write up and build with the Giken unit. heres a few pics...

These lil guys have let me down, but they did take more abuse than you can even imagine.

Sorry to hear about the diff breaking, but at least it took a punishing. Do you think the AP2 benefits more from a firmer pressure plate than from removing the CDV?

glad you were able to break it.
any more info on what you are replacing it with? cost? improvements, etc?

What makes you think the Giken is better then a Torsen?
Its a different system, clutch disks instead of gears.
In the Giken you probably need to run a "special" friction modified (non LE-607) oil and change it frequently for the clutch pack to work properly.
There is no mention of oil type required at their website though.
Worth asking.
Tell us if you allready know
25k miles, the way you drove (and drive
) the car, may be too much, even for LE-607.
Are you going to change the final drive ratio too?
4.56's?

Great post! Sounds like you're the self appointed equipment tester for all of us. I haven't figured out why yet, though. If you could, please add this thread link to the one below from "Oil Journals". It looks like we have 2 failures now with LE 607. I don't know how much can be attributed to the fluid after 61K miles of unprecedented abuse though.
