Default Clearance issue with Sony's CDX-MP70 (top-of-the-line head unit for 2002)

For anyone else who was waiting for the next generation of Sony head units, I just got my shiny new CDX-MP70 from etronics.com...only to learn from my installer that it won't work in the S2000! Its motorized door comes down 3/4-inch. Unfortunately, that appears to be 1/2 inch more than we have to work with.

Oh well....

Went with the CDX-M610 instead, for now. One thing: the unit appears to be "floating" in the dash, as the installer insisted that the trim piece will not fit. Anyone else with a CDX-M610 have any suggestions?

I also have the CDX-M610 and the Sony trim piece fits fine in the Honda console cutout. After a few weeks I ended up chucking it though because I find it easier to insert a CD without the trim piece in place. I agree that the silver headunit looks like it's floating and you can kind of see the mounting bolts but to me it's not that big a deal.

I got the MP-70 to fit after much trial and tribulation. However, the trim doesn't fit and it also seems to "float" as you say.

Kaptain Insano -- Can you describe specifically what you did to get the CDX-MP70 to fit? Did you have to modify the dash or stereo opening at all? Any chance you could post a photo? If it's realistic, and not too much of a PITA, I'm going to have my installer take a shot at it.

Thanks.

Top of the line? Not quite. Try the MEX-1HD . . . HD as in Hard Drive

But, I'm not willing to drop that kind of scrilla!

Is there any way to get rid of this "floating" look? Is there something you could buy to fill in around the head unit?

Thanks,
Kaptain Insano

Here's some shots of the CDX-MP70 installed. There is no problem with clearance when the faceplate slides down and the cd tray opens out. The 2nd photo shows the cd tray opened and the shifter in 3rd gear.

Major problem when you want to close the radio flap, it hits the radio knobs and will not close. You can remove the faceplate and the flap closes otherwise the radio is exposed and the first person seeing it will take your removeable faceplate. I removed the inner panel from the flap and now there is enough clearance for it to close. The 3rd photo shows the panel that I removed.

As for the previous comments about floating headunits, I had no problems installing the Sony trim piece.

So far the unit works great. On top of the regular Sony bus/RCA inputs, there is a 2nd set of AUX IN jacks with front panel gain control. Pretty slick unit. Oh yeah, this unit has the jack for S2KMan's DCU.

Very cool! Thanks for posting those pictures. I might just get this headunit now. I need the aux input and DCU jack.

How's the radio reception?

Remind me to take a close look at PIR in two weeks!

It's better than the CDX-M610 but there's still a noticeable volume increase when going from FM to CD. My gut feeling is that the culprit is the wimpy OEM antenna. I'm tempted to try the Honda Insight antenna to see if I get better reception. Anyway, I'm going XM once Sony introduces their new XM module in May.
