A Florida kid and his buddies went out for some high speed runs in his dad's '08 M5. They had just been at a birthday party, with alcohol. They illegally entered an airport to run on the runway at 3am.
The car left the end of the elevated runway (about 80-85ft high), sailed 200ft and struck an oak about 15ft above the ground. The car split in half and burst into flames. Some of the passengers were ejected others were "semi ejected". All died. Ages were 18, 19, 19, 19, 20.
The driver had just been posting on the M5board the day before asking for shifting advice at 140mph WOT. He caught some hell along with some sage advice to be careful. He assured everyone he sometimes makes mistakes, but is careful.
His last post on the board was expressing interest in attending an upcoming speed trial for top speed at a controlled event at an airport. I guess that is what gave him the idea to tresspass on the airport the night of the crash to do top speed runs.
Some people don't respect speed or danger and this can happen.
Hopefully this will make people think and keep hyper-legal speeds to a controlled environment such as a race track and under ideal conditions (ie. daylight), not drinking and not with 5 people in a car during a ill advised top speed run.
Reminds me of the tool in the GT3 on the autobahn video or the tool with the 900hp Vette on the street. I wish people would cut that crap out. It gives real car enthuasts a bad image.
Some stupid teen with booze and 4 equally stupid guys in the car, empty airfield at 3AM, not an actual organized event, no way to know when to stop unless they had a series of signs/markers up.........Darwin > them
Controlled? Some stupid teen with booze and 4 equally stupid guys in the car, empty airfield at 3AM, not an actual organized event, no way to know when to stop unless they had a series of signs/markers up (which considering the fact that they were young, boozed, and now dead......they probably didn't)......if that's your idea of a controlled setting, I'd hate to see your definition of FUBAR.
Food for thought: there was a reason they had a huge "STOP" sign on the runway on Top Gear when doing big MPH runs....with that much tarmac and a low vantage point, you have no idea where you are in relation to the boundaries, especially at triple digit speeds, and ten times so at 3AM.
Agreed. Certainly no one deserves to die, and that's always something to think about when one hears this type of news. But the kids were acting like kids, and he took four others with him. Tragic.
