Default 70mm single exhaust noise solution!...kinda

Peoples,

So I bought the Invidia 70mm single exhaust from a guy who got rid of it because the volume was unbearable. I installed the exhaust and, on top of being loud and straight, I am supercharged which compounded the problem. Short of a Formula 1 car, I have literally never heard anything as loud as my exhaust was. I don't believe Invidia stock muffler does a thing. INTOLERABLE.

Well, I'm getting up in the years now and I no longer think it's cool to rice around...so I took my car to a pro. The guy is a total gearhead who welds like a champ. He's got a turbo Elise and manufactured the entire setup himself...you must see this thing. Anyway, he recommends this:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02race.asp

The little 6 inch oval race resonator (3" diameter) does wonders! I cannot believe the noise reduction! It is straight through and flows plenty. He welded the resonator between the rear subframe brace and the stock Invidia resonator. Now the car has HKS-like volume (I've owned both) when I drive around normally. If I get on it, the exhaust still gets quite loud.

THEN, I installed the silencer that came with the kit. What a huge difference. The car has a hint of resonance at the usual ~3300rpm but it's NOTHING like before. The reduction in power doesn't bug me running around on the road since I won't get an exhaust ticket now.

Ok, so there's one issue: clearance. If your car is street driven and you have a lot of speed bumps in your area, this is not the solution for you. I would say I have 3 inches of clearance before the Magnaflow resonator rubs.

Anyway, so another issue you should know about. I am running the AEM standalone and I have a wideband. Those of you switching to a 70mm exhaust should know that there is a very serious flow difference as compared to an exhaust like the HKS. I am running MUCH leaner: 14.1 - 14.5 in upper rpm as compared to 12.3 max prior to the 70mm exhaust. This is a major difference and means that, if you are not comfortable tuning your own car, you will need to consider a retune upon changing your exhaust. I am lucky I had knock control enabled because I could have popped my motor today doing a pull. I will pull the plugs to see what happened but I could feel the car pullup as the ecu retarded the timing.

I cannot believe the difference in flow. I am itching to get to a dyno ASAP to see what I am putting down. I will retune tomorrow and take some pictures of the kind of work this guy did...those welds are art! I am pumped to have a 70mm that flows great and doesn't make my ears bleed. Magnaflow is no joke...they packed that thing full of stainless steel wool.

***********EDIT***********
Here are some pics of the custom work. Check out the nifty third exhaust hanger he made and hung from one of the differential mounts:

Did I read what you wrote right?

You are running MUCH leaner with the 70mm than you were with the HKS? Any idea compared to stock?

I really should go for a rip now that I put my AEM wideband on to see what I run with the 70mm exhaust. I'm stock besides that and a toda header, but the S/C goes on soon, so I should get a baseline.

Don't sweat it on the stock ecu...the stock ecu does a good job of compensating for something like a change in exhaust.

are you sure?

with an exhaust and test pipe, K&N intake, and j's header, i was running a 16:1 AFR at WOT!

a friend of mine with the same setup minus the header was running 15.5 or so...

hmm maybe because you have a 01, and the 00/01s are a bit more rich up top than other years.. my friend and I both have 06+ S2000s

are you running a test pipe?

hmm...this is obviously NA right? Did you calibrate the wideband? That is quite lean.

No test pipe for me, but yes it is an '01 very stinky and black after running it -- which is fine for me hopefully it stays at this A/F when I get the S/C on.
