Default Looking to buy 2004 S2000...

I found a reasonably priced 2004 S2000, with 72,000 miles. It's at a dealership but the price is comparable to private party prices on craigslist and autotrader. It's $14,000.

Anything I should look out for? It looks really really clean in the pictures, even the leather has very little wear on the bolsters. It's completely stock. The shift knob is slightly off center, but I don't know if that's normal or if it can just be screwed back on/off and centered easy. (the shift tree is pointed slightly to one direction, if that makes sense).

Also, is the hood gap relatively large on all of these cars?

Any ideas?

Ouch, 72k miles in a car that new? I'd make sure it is up-to-date with maintenance, and maybe even get a compression/leakdown test done...should tell you how healthy that motor is.

Hood gap should not be big at all. Photos? How does it look in-person?

(the locknut under the shift knob just needs to be adjusted, takes 5 seconds with a crescent wrench)

Have the shocks been replaced? Any accidents? Tranmission and Diff been serviced? Timing belt, water pump, etc...

Records would go a long way, but the engine should go for a long time when properly maintained. I'd be worried about the suspension being loose, as this car should be really tight and solid.

What you could do is test drive it, and then test drive a new one to determine how warn this car drives.

Good luck

It's from a dealer but they don't have any records. I have the VIN if anyone is able to run it.

Here's the front end picture:

I'm just wondering if that gap is in-line with what they normally look like.
Here's a random picture I found for comparison and it seems normal but you guys would know better. It looks like the hood may not have been shut all the way (or just released pre-opening the hood?)

If anybody can find a link to that thread about what to look for, I would also appreciate it. I'm searching but I can't find it. Also looking at 04's.

Hood gap looks right.

I wouldn't be too worried about the mileage if the maintenance is up to date. In many cases an S2K with high miles for it's age was just a commuter and commuters are not usually beat on like weekend (low mileage) cars are.

hmm the gap does look a little big to me too... make sure to run a carfax thru it incase something happened although it dosen't always show.

i agree with others, you should try to run all the tests before buying it. i'm thinking it might have been in an accident because of that hood though.

i have a 04 with 38,000 miles on it...i have done fluids and filtes and tires and an airpump...that would make noise at start up and run on...other than that there is no timing belt...maybe you need tires or brakes, which is easy enough to see by looking...i have also had honda do a valve adjust and fluid change, that is also good...these cars require little else except good quality gas

Well I went to my local honda dealer since I had never really test driven an S2000 outside of a parking lot, and I got to drive an 08. I really loved it, and hopefully I can get my hands on one soon.

I'm still waiting on the dealership with the 04 I want (they are far away) to get back to me.
