Default Rattly engine/Oil question

I wonder if you lot can help me please.

My S2K when pulling away can occasionally make this rattly fluttery metallic sound under load. It will do it through the gears (stops when you lift off the throttle or change up) then starts again when you get back on the gas.

It is usually accompanied by a noise when coasting (sounds like transmission noise).

The first time this happened I checked the oil and it was showing about 3/4's full so I topped it up to full and the noise went away.

Over the last few months, if the oil dropped to around the 3/4's level the noises would return and I'd top up again and the noises stopped.

I changed the oil at the weekend, this time going for Castrol 0w40 edge sport.

Oil level to the top but yesterday the noise started again. Checked oil level and it's at the top. A few miles later the noise stopped.

This morning, same thing.

The fluttery metallic sound increases with revs but doesn't happen on a constant throttle, only under load.

It's making me very nervous, any ideas??

Thanks

TCT/Valve adjustment needed/car hasn't warmed up fully.

Any chance you can post a sound clip? It would help us out tremendously. Failing that, have a noise round Youtube, alot of owners have posted their noises on there.

If it sounds like a card hitting the spokes of a wheel when rotated, I would bet it's the TCT.

Do a search as well though...there's a wealth of info knocking around.

63k miles.

I thought the oil may be too thin when it started making the noise when full...

Thanks, I'll have a browse.
That sounds a very good way of describing it.

I'll search on TCT, thanks.

Searching on rattle gives me loads but after a few hours I gave up and posted LOL.

Although wouldn't a TCT issue be more noticable on overrun than under load?

Mine sounds rough as anything between 3 to 6K on full load and has done for the last 10k miles. It's worse when cold and sounds like your description. I've never looked into it, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed with the theory that the longer it makes that noise without blowing up the less likely it is to be terminal.

Nope...the flywheel is more noticeable on the overrun and I believe it is common to have a noisy one on S2k's.

A failing TCT can be noticeable when the engine is idle...depends how bad it is.

All the 'noisy' threads I've read have been TCT/valves. Alan Day Honda did my valve adjustment for

It's the fact it only happens sometimes that confuses me. When it does decide to happen it's normally when pulling away. Will check YouTube tonight to see if I can identify something similar.
