i just had to run down to the store while I was there I read the letter, the author of the letter is actually a member/guest on this board. He is a great guy and some of us have been to his track events. He is (I believe) the President of SAMOA (Sacramento Area Miata Owners Assoc). He is a good driver and doesn't surprise me that he passed S2K's at LS. I am surprised though how he came across in the letter.

The article from Automobile magazine states:
Miata/S2000 War of Words
I just read with interest, and some disdain, the letters to the editor in the May issue panning the Mazda Miata's virtues versus the Honda S2000. I had the pleasure of participating in the S2K Club of America open track day at Laguna Seca last January. Imagine the bull's-eye painted on me and my 1999 Miata by the fifty-five S2000's that were present. There were also a Chevrolet Corvette and an Acura NSX along just to keep things interesting. Well it turned out that they were the easy pickins's and not I. In my run group, which consisted of myself and about 18 other S2000's, I was never passed but did most of the passing myself. Perhaps some of it is driver-related, but the Hondas were just no match in the corners and not outrun me on the straight.

well... I think it's obvious this guy needs a little education.
At the recent CART event at Laguna Seca one of the opening acts was a big Spec Miata race. The fastest lap during the race was a 1:49.2 (I couldnt find any qualifying times). Thats for a car thats allowed to be stripped down to a weight of 2380 (with the driver!) for 1.8 liter cars, runs race tires, and has some allowed suspension changes. I've personally run LS in 1:45.0 in my S2000 with shocks, exhaust, swaybar and some *large* Hoosiers. Jason Saini has done mid 1:44s in Nick Wong's King Motorsports car on Hoosiers, and I believe Paul Mumford has run in the 1:46s in a bone stock car on A032Rs...
I love Miatas, but this kind of thinking needs a reality check.

Let me get this straight, wasn't the Laguna Seca day more for driver's education than it was for racing. From talking to some of the poeple there, I thought the whole idea was not to really race. I see he failed to mention that in his letter. What an idiot.
