I bought the bar for my car and, over the long holiday weekend, attempted the installation myself. Here are some notes.
The bar itself is a substantial piece (at least 40 lbs, though I didn't weigh it), and looks like this:
First, to remove the stock roll hoops, the interior needs to be completely gutted from the center console rearward (the hoops themselves are easy to remove once the seats and panels are out). Then place the bar in its new home, raising the top partway to allow for easier access. Here's what you have now:
Now, the bar is designed to be "spread", so that it mounts under tension. (Mine had to be spread quite a lot (nearly 1"), but Aaron's updating the fabrication jig so that less spreading will be needed.) I used a pipe clamp (reconfigured as a spreader) to stretch the bar until the front mounting holes lined up with the mounting holes from the stock roll hoops:
Front-brace mounting location:
Once that's done, the bar will feel like an integral piece of the chassis (and it is!). But we're not quite done. The other mounting points require drilling through the rear wheel wells. Viewed from the wheel wells, here's what the mounting plates look like:
From the top, here's the mount (note the pre-drilled hole for the (I think) ABS sensor signal wire/connector):
And that's it! You now have a rollbar that:
- Is strong as $#!%
- Is tall enough to protect someone who's 6'2" or more
- Still fits under the soft top
- Looks cool!
Originally posted by spider John, did you retain the stock seatbelt mounting points?
Yes. The seatbelt tensioner assemblies remain in their stock positions, as does the floor mount for the end of the belt. The belt "guides", which bolted to the stock roll hoops, now bolt into corresponding pieces on the new bar. They're visible in the photos in the discussion thread, linked in the top post (link fixed!).
