Default Adult literacy for the epic win...

RARE are the cases when using an 'S' in a word, in which an apostrophe is required. Only when combining two words, such as "it is" to "it's", and only when the noun belongs to the subject of the sentence. eg This is Jane's ball. Pluralising, eg Illiterate to Illiterates, does not need an apostrophe. F'ING EVER (note also correct use of apostrophe when abbreviating).

I only forgive you and apologise for this post, if you are dyslexic or otherwise language challenged.

By all means tell me what a pedantic asshat I am, but it really bothers me intensely that the written word is being butchered beyond belief daily. I see it as possibly one of the biggest indicators of devolution. I was taught this stuff when I was 9 years old FFS. I wouldn't have passed my exams if I had punctuated as some do. Don't tell me 'this is a forum', etc. Cos that isn't valid when your mistakes are not due to being quick or abbreviating, but bastardising the language due to lack of education, such as inappropriate use of apostrophes which I swear 50% of people do.

The funny part is that apostrophes have been further removed from business English. For example, it is normal not to put an apostophe in the word "it's" in business correspondence.

Don't EVEN get me started on the atrocious spelling and grammar. Communication is what separates us from the animals and why we rule this planet and not tigers.

For god's sake people, READ BOOKS (note again correct use of apostrophe in case of possession. Non-capitalisation of the word god is deliberate on my part).

Do you want us to point out all the mistakes in your post (for the epic win)?

I don't mind, I'm not perfect, but I'm more than acceptable. I wouldn't go to the trouble of writing a forum post the same way I would write business correspondence, but I wish a certain level could be obtained; at least to a point where the words used are spelled correctly, and such obvious gaffes as misuse of apostrophes are eradicated.

Communication is the key. Misspellings, poor punctuation and misuse of words can completely change the meaning of what you are trying to communicate. Since we are on a written word forum proper english is more important than when you're "hangin' with the guys" and have non verbal communication going on and can quickly explain if someone doesn't understand what you are trying to say.

Also there is a difference between someone making an occasional honest misteak and an illiterate boob who continually is unintelligible.

What most people don't think about is that certain assumptions about your intelligence are made by how you present yourself. You might be the smartest person in the world, but if you communicate like a 5th grader then in most people's mind you are no better than a 5th grader and they don't take anything you say seriously.

Since you wouldn't want to be the pot calling out the kettle, right?

I don't know..it seems a little hypocritical to make a rant on literacy/grammar and then not doublecheck yourself for similar mistakes. You say people shouldnt use "this is a forum" as an excuse, but you just did since "it isnt a business correspondence."

I find an obviously misspelled word to be more troublesome than a missed apostrophe. They are often skipped due to laziness (I've done it...where I don't use them for words like...well....dont). My biggest gripe is those that use text shorthand for normal typing (hey, how RU). Just type it out! It's 2 extra seconds!
People that text even rarely use it anymore because they have full qwerty on their phones many times..haha.

SHE?!

I'm a dude, and besides, I just read through it again, and apart from a couple of sentences which could have benefited from better structure, there aren't any 'mistakes'.

Comma in the one-line second paragraph isn't really necessary. Use of the word 'cos' instead of 'because'. Last comma in third paragraph is acceptable, but would have been better as a semi-colon. The last 'and' in the 5th paragraph should be removed and replaced with a comma. Lack of use of proper articles in the parentheses at the end of the post.

That's it.
