Default Update(8/14/10)70mm Berk TP(Tripped after 6-7k)

Hi all, I tried to search but it is down...again. Hence the reason for this thread.

Looking into a 70mm test pipe to mate with my Greddy SE dual exhaust. First choice would've been the J's racing so I can bolt up the shield and hide it due to me residing in Nazi-fornia. But I found out that the J's pipe is not a 70mm pipe.

So now my choices are:

Invidia 70mm
Berk Technology 70mm
Skunk2 70mm(skeptical, heard their quality has diminished or is just not on par as the rest of these company's I've listed)

Let me know if I'm missing anyone else that produces one. I know about several of the off branded companies being offered for around $20-$30 on ebay and am staying away from these.

I Currently have a CAI and the Greddy SE I mentioned earlier as my engine mods. Preferable that they have a CEL fix(which most do but thought I'd throw this in) so that I don't have to drive around w/ a check engine light on on my '07. Any company have better results of having the CEL in check?

A pipe is a pipe. All test pipes are going to have the same shape and all. As long as it is the diameter you want and welds are good it doesn't make a difference. Some have cel foulers or whatever others you gotta put one on.
Even a cheap $25 ebay one if in that size would work fine.

^^ I'd just rather stick with a company that is more heard of and has a better track record of keeping the CEL in check on the DBW cars. Thanks, though.

Asura's HFC has a Carb #, runs about 250-275 (I can't remember exactly, he charged me 250 but it might because I bought his exhaust as well).

Yeah, I've looked into that HFC already and I was quoted $250. But in Cali, it's still illegal unless the car has more than $80k miles(when emission control parts warrenty expires) and have to do paperwork with a shop that installs it along with them keeping the stock CAT for 3 months in the shop and all that hooplah. I figured I'd just go for a test pipe.

No CEL light with the HFC on your '06, though?

The CEL being kept in check is done by a CEL fix. A test pipe is a hollow metal pipe. Any test pipe will have the same chance of turning on your CEL.

The way you manipulate the O2 sensor bung is what keeps the CEL off. Do the mechanical CEL fixes not work for the 06+'s?

You could stack 2X of the autozone O2 fixes on top of each other to see if that works? Maybe the sensor parameters are just more sensitive. More stacking = less fumes getting to the O2 sensor to turn on the CEL.

As long as the welds hold and the steel doesn't rust out (rust shouldn't be an issue for you) and the bends aren't wack, a $20 pipe is just the same as a $500 pipe for your purposes.

It's a pipe.

Removing the Cat is against the law everywhere. Your best chance at avoiding problems is probably going to be an HFC. Straight pipe as in a test pipe would be a dead give away at any inspection. On the otherhand, HFC's are not straight pipe thus may go un-noticed.

I should be receiving it this week, although I've never heard about a CEL issue with this piece so I'm going to assume there isn't one.

I mean you are right, however I guess at least given their both not legal the HFC will be easier to get away with. If a cop looks under at least it would look like a cat and have a #. A TP is blatantly not a cat, ya know?

Of course if the cop knows what he's looking at u couldnt get away with it, but he'd definitely spot a TP. I guess for me it was the safer of the two options. Plus I get OCD about stuff and if possible would like everything that flows in a line to be from the same company
