Default My Vortech SC Woes.

Vortech finally sent me the newer version of the wiring diagram and i redid it soon after i received it. Drove the car for about 20 trouble free minutes until the cel came one and i could not rev past 3k when buying my kit i was totally under the impression that they would already have all the timing box issues worked out. i guess i was wrong.

So i called vortech today and asked them if they could send me a new unit asap. They said i would have to send the old unit in and wait until they received more timing boxes. the guy i spoke with could not give me an ETA on the new boxes. im soooo pissed.

would it be ok for me just to run the map controller and stock timing for the time being? will there be any damage if i were to rev her high? and for those of you who have had issues with the vortech sc, can you refer me to the tech who helped you?

TIA

DJ, if you want the "top man" on the S2000 kit, call and ask for Trevor. He is hard to get a hold of, but explain to him what is going on and he is usually very helpful. The Vortech S2000 is his daily driver. If you don't get him, don't bother leaving a message because he never calls back....

Jenner, I'm glad you showed up on this thread. At one point when a couple of you fellows were having some issues with your new kits, I abandoned the whole idea but a deal came up lately that I just couldn't refuse and my Vortech will be here in a week or so. I don't plan to install it till next May (no point in having a S/C in through the winter).
Have all those irritating little issues been resolved for good? I remember something about a nut that just wouldn't stay tight on some pulley. Does the new spark plug gap provide a permanent cure? And a few other little things that I've lost track of now. Now that you've driven the car for a bit longer, your input here would still be most valuable to help me (and perhaps others) decide whether or not to put this thing in.

X for your use here are the problems I had(with a monday kit):

Undrilled crank pulley (I sent it back for exchange)

Wrong Vortech ECU(aka black box) (same as above)

Wrong NPT oil fitting (should be NPT on one end and flair on the other Vortech sent a bunch to Evolution Autosports)

Wrong wiring diagram in install manual (sent me updated manual)

Water pump bracket too small (Evo provided a part for this, but I believe the new kits come with the correct part)

I believe all of these issues have been fixed in all the kits that shipped 1-2 weeks after ours(which shipped the end of July 2002)

The spark plug problem was just S2k Troup and his silly Denso Iridium plugs

Just install new NGK copper plugs, 1 heat range colder and gapped to 0.035 and you will have no issues. If you want to change the gap from that, use different heat ranges, or use a different material, I would talk to both Vortech and your tuner first.

I had a "monday kit" and ran into the above problems during my install and haven't had a problem since. The people who are experiencing loose bolts are the ones that did not tighten the bolt/nut correctly in the first place. Both the bolt and the nut hold the pulley on. Most people think it is just the bolt, so they torque that down nice and hard, but don't torque down the nut! Call Vortech about that issue when it comes time to bolt yours on and they will tell you exactly what to do.

I've had the kit for ~3000 miles now, and I only have three problems remaining:

1. I am running lean because of other mods I have done to the car. 9/17/02 I am getting my V-AFC tuned in order to run a little richer and hopefully make more power

2. My clutch is slipping badly. 9/14/02 my new Stage 4 clutch and Toda flywheel get installed. NOTE: If you are going to install a clutch(which you will need to do) do it BEFORE the supercharger is installed as the engine needs to be lowered 5" in order to do the clutch swap.

3. I drive way too fast and reach triple digits in an insanly short amount of time

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jenner, the clutch is on my list before the S/C. I'm going to get Honda to do the TSB for the buzz just like another Calgary owner. At least this will give me a new clutch "fresh" start before having to go heavy duty later.
For me, this will be a bolt on so I would hope that everything will work as advertised. I'm going to be the installer AND the "tuner" so if there is a problem I won't have any professional resources to fall back on except to contact Vortech (or maybe to PM people like you).

I got the timing unit sent overnight to me as well. They even supplied me with a UPS account number to send the old one back.

So, are these the 7/21/02 versions everyone is sending back or a later version? What is the latest version?
