Saturday was a perfect day for our Old McKenzie Pass drive – not too hot, not too chilly on the pass, and beautifully sunny! Just the way we like it.
We start with breakfast.
A familiar face joins us (no, not Julie, the “original” Huy!).
There is a little pre-drive chit-chat as we wait for last minute arrivals.
Then we are off.
We make our way south on I-5 in one long string of Ss.
At Springfield we head east on the scenic “Shonda Memorial Drive” through Marcola.
Then it is onto Hwy. 242 as we make our way up the pass.
The roads were in great shape and each team made good time.
Toward the top we get some glimpses of the Sisters and of the lava beds.
Approaching the top.
At Dee Wright Observatory.
A perfect place for photos.
Aaron takes this opportunity to tell the group about his prowess as shot-put champion when he was at Midlin Elementary School.
“Most” of the group – those that were on the top of the observatory just before we left.
Chris is a little embarrassed as Julie tries to give him a hickey in front of the rest of us.
We gather again in the parking area before departure to Sisters.
Then it is down the other side of the pass.
We approach Sisters.
And, we make our lunch stop at the Village Green city park.
Some wander off to the local eateries and some stay for a picnic lunch in the park.
After refueling we meet up north of Sisters for our departure.
And say our goodbyes to Aaron and Shonda.
We head north to Detroit.
With a few more scenic views along the way.
At Detroit we encounter their big ’50s car show in the center of town.
Elizabeth catches a cat-nap after a grueling day of driving (and especially, of getting up early to do that).
Hey! Who’s that guy in the blue car?
We head up into the Mt. Hood National Forest for our return to the Portland area.
NOT keeping the gap closed up!
We skim along the beautiful Clackamas River on our final approach.
And end up back at I-5 as we wrap up another fun Old McKenzie Pass drive.
Thanks to Dave, Amy and Doug for doing a great job as Drive Leaders. And thanks to all who attended.
We hope to see you next month at our “Twin Peaks” drive to Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier!

Didn't get any pictures this time because we forgot the camera at home.
It was a relatively fun drive. A few inconsiderate people who wouldnt move out of the way on the McKenzie, but overall a good drive with lots of fun socializing!
